MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Both Carson-Newman's men's and women's cross country teams had four top 20 finishers as both teams took third place overall at the Maryville Invitational Saturday morning.
Sara Honaker turned in Carson-Newman's first top five finish in more than a year by coming in third in the women's race. She finished four seconds away from a second place finish.
Amanda Bowman followed closely behind in sixth place with a time of 27:21, while Megan Farjellah and Rachel Hutson finished in 15th and 19th respectively.
"We ran a skeleton crew but had quite a few positive individual accomplishments," C-N head cross country coach Tony Parrilla said. "Conference is our goal and we are on track to be competitive there."
The men's team was again led by its freshman. Nick Guerra and Joshua Marsh finished sixth and ninth respectively – the first top ten finishes by the men's team this season.
Patrick Stump had a career best finish coming in 16th, while Alex Bross ended in 18th place.
The race was not without challenges for the men's team. Marsh ran into a tree – one described as ninja-like by head coach Tony Parrilla – and Guerra was stung by a bee midrace.
The Eagles head to the Royals Pre-Region challenge on October 11, next.
