VIDEO: Chuck Benson Interview
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman head men's basketball coach Chuck Benson has announced the signing of 6-6, 210-pound power forward Cameron Andre (Kissimmee, Fla., Gateway High School) for the early signing period.
"Sawyer's our lone senior," Benson said. "We turn around and replace him with Cameron Andre. He's a post player and we feel like he has a lot of potential. We liked his attitude and liked him enough to put an offer on the table early."
Andre is averaging 13 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and two assists per game for coach Travis James at Gateway High School.
He was also being recruited by Bowling Green and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
"I hate comparing people because it can put undue pressure on someone," Benson said. "But he has that Carson Brooks look about him. He has a motor and compete doing blue-collar work in the post. But at the same time, he has a skillset that can surprise you."
The son of Amanda Andre, he plans to study graphic design at Carson-Newman. Andre said he chose Carson-Newman in part because of its Christian environment.
