Williams lauded with academic all-district accolade for second time

AUSTIN, Texas – For the second time in his career, Carson-Newman senior forward Sawyer Williams (Owenton, Ky.) has been lauded with Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Williams is one of four South Atlantic Conference athletes who made the cut.  Williams joins Newberry's James Stepp, Coker's Nathan Lemke and Wingate's Keith Griffin.

The biology major carries a 3.37 GPA.  Last year, he was the first ever player to earn the distinction from CoSIDA for head coach Chuck Benson.

Williams is the NCAA Division II active leader for career field goal percentage.  He's sixth in the SAC in scoring this year and tops among players listed on the all-district team.  He averages 17.8 points per game.

He ranks third in the league in field goal percentage with a 59.8 percent clip.  His 60 offensive rebounds are third in the conference.

Williams has strung together 30 consecutive double-digit scoring efforts dating back to his junior season, the second longest double-digit scoring streak in Carson-Newman history behind Charles Clark's (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) 52-game streak that came to an end earlier this season.

Williams has posted eight, 20-point scoring efforts this season and five double-doubles, tied for the fourth most in a single season in Carson-Newman history.

He poured in 33 points in a win over Newberry on Dec. 3, 2016.

Williams and the rest of the Eagles will be in action on Saturday against Lenoir-Rhyne inside Holt Fieldhouse. Tip with the Bears is scheduled for 4 p.m.  Pregame coverage starts at 3:45 with the AEC Countdown to Tipoff on Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
