Clark tabbed captain of men’s basketball all-decade team

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The South Atlantic Conference's all-time leading scorer and two-time All-American Charles Clark has been selected as the team captain for Carson-Newman men's basketball's all-decade team, released Monday morning by the Carson-Newman Athletic Communications Office.

Carson-Newman played in three NCAA tournaments this decade, won a SAC tournament title, the third in school history, and produced the second-longest string of consecutive winning seasons in program history.

The All-Decade team was selected by head coach Chuck Benson, assistant coaches Parker Role' and KT Carter, and the Voice of the Eagles Adam Cavalier.

All told, the five players selected to the first team – Charles Clark, Antoine Davis, Ish Sanders, Sawyer Williams and Carson Brooks combined to score 8,594 points in their careers.

Clark is as good as a scorer as the South Atlantic Conference has ever seen.  He holds both the league's career and single-game scoring records.

With an All-American accolade from the Division II Bulletin, Carson-Newman senior guard Charles Clark joined Carson-Newman legend Gil Luttrell (1963 and 64) as the only two-time All-Americans in the history of the Carson-Newman men's basketball program.

He finished his tenure at the Creek with 2,339 career points. He is the South Atlantic Conference's all-time leading scorer and the third all-time leading scorer in the history of the Carson-Newman men's basketball program.  With 208 career steals, he is Carson-Newman's all-time leader for the category and sixth all-time in SAC history. He has made the second most field goals in league history at 716. He finished his career as the SAC's all-time leader in free throws made and with the second most in Carson-Newman history with 634.

The Murfreesboro, Tenn.-native tallied up the highest scoring triple-double in the history of basketball (NCAA or NBA) at the time while resetting both the Carson-Newman and South Atlantic Conference single-game scoring records against Coker on Feb. 25, 2017.  Clark poured in 54 points to bypass Ish Sanders (51 points versus Mars Hill in 2011) for the Carson-Newman record and RJ McLure (52 points versus Anderson in 2014) for the South Atlantic Conference mark.  He was also named MVP of the SAC tournament his freshman year.

Sanders and Davis both guided Carson-Newman to its first NCAA tournament appearance in a decade in 2013-14 and its first at-large berth ever.  Davis, an All-American and two-time all-region choice concluded his Carson-Newman career with 1,526 points and 18.3 points per game, the highest scoring average for any Eagle in the Division II era.

Meanwhile, Sanders, also a two-time all-region choice, is the program's all-time leader in threes made with 340 – a figure that ranks second in South Atlantic Conference history.  His 1,922 career points rank sixth all-time in program history.

Williams transformed himself throughout his Carson-Newman career into one of the toughest players in league history.  He snagged back-to-back All-SAC selections as a junior and senior. Williams turned in his best season as a Carson-Newman basketball player as a senior, averaging 18.2 points per game and 6.8 rebounds.  With 1,559 career points he is the 11th best scorer in school history and the third best scorer for the Eagles in the Division II era.

Finally, Carson Brooks checks in with 1,248 career points, a pair of all-region accolades and a preseason All-American honor.  His 493 defensive boards are the fourth most in the Division II era.
