2013 regular season highlight reel
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - This is the ninth part in a 10-part series breaking down each of Carson-Newman football's opponents for the 2014 season. This feature breaks down the Eagles' week 10 contest – Nov. 8 and a rematch for Newberry, which C-N beat twice in 2013.
Carson-Newman and Newberry shared supremacy in the SAC in the preseason for the most all-conference selections. The Eagles and Wolves each turned in 11 all-conference picks. That returning talent could help the Wolves be ripe and ready for another playoff run and a shot at a SAC crown.
Yes, Newberry does lose All-American wide receiver and present New York Giant Corey Washington, but the Wolves bring back seven starters on offense, including both heads to their two QB monster.
WT Murden earned first team All-SAC honors in the preseason after tossing for 1,964 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. Raleigh Yeldell is Newberry's returning leading rusher. The dual-threat QB tallied 533 yards on the ground last year.
Yeldell was the more impressive of the two QBs last year in the two meetings with the Eagles. He gained 101 yards on the ground in the regular season meeting – a 52-31 C-N win – and 89 yards in the playoffs – a 37-27 C-N victory.
The Eagles pass rush was able to get to Murden, bringing him down five times in the playoffs, while Yeldell proved more evasive.
Among the Wolves' running backs, Romelo Doctor returns after he was sidelined with an injury eight games into the season. He's the Wolves' top returning rusher who isn't also a quarterback. Doctor tallied 356 yards on the ground last year.
The Wolves do have an all-conference wide receiver in Byron Dickerson to aid in the replacement of both Washington and Jason Livingston. Dickerson was the Wolves second leading receiver a year ago with 386 yards and three touchdowns.
Up front, Newberry only loses Jamaal Ellis; Landon Martin, Evan Sobocinski, Stephen Nance and Landon Martin all return.
Defensively, the bulk of Newberry's secondary returns, but the Wolves lose three of their four linebackers and two of their three defensive linemen to graduation. The star defensively for the Wolves is linebacker Edmund Robinson. He made 69 tackles last year with 12 tackles for loss. 2.5 sacks and six pass breakups.
Carson-Newman's Better Know The Opponent series concludes Thursday with a preview of week 11 opponent Wingate.
