JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman football return man Lonnie Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) and women's soccer goalie Katy Hill (Cleveland, Tenn.) have been named Bojangles' Male and Female Athletes of the Week.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katy Hill (Knoxville, Tenn.) stepped into the role as starting goalkeeper for the Carson-Newman women's soccer team after an injury to fellow sophomore Taylor Hammond. Hill's first start of 2014 ended with a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over King.
Hill finished the week with a 1-1 record and a goal against average of just 1.00. The sophomore recorded 13 saves in the team's two games, including a nine-save performance against Catawba that tied a season-high. She has a save percentage of .867.
To begin her 2014 campaign, Hill carried a scoreless streak of 170 minutes.
Lonnie Williams set a school record for kickoff return yards with 215 Saturday against Brevard. His first career kickoff return went 100 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the game. The 100-yard kickoff return is the fourth in school history and the first since 1992.
Damon Wright has two of the four, housing from 100 yards out against Wingate in 1992 and Presbyterian in 1990. Kenneth Tyson had the first 100-yard kickoff return against Mesa in 1983.
Williams averaged 43 yards per kickoff return over his five run backs. That tally is the seventh most among returners with at least two returns in a game and first among players returning five kicks in a single game. Williams also earned South Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts against Brevard.
Bojangles is a proud corporate sponsor of Carson-Newman athletics. Eagle fans can get a free large sweet tea from the Jefferson City location the Saturday and Sunday after a Carson-Newman football game where the Eagles score 28 points or more by telling the cashier, "It's Bo Time at Carson-Newman."
