JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman return man Lonnie Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) has been selected as one of five national return men of the week by the Beyond Sports Network.
Williams returned a first quarter kickoff 95 yards for a score. He was one of five players to return a kickoff at least 88 yards for a score nationwide last week.
Williams also returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score against Brevard. Williams joins Willie Lundy (1987), Damon Wright (1990) and Kendall James (1993) as the only players to return multiple kickoffs for touchdowns in a single season. James holds the school record with four touchdown returns in a single season – he had two in a game against Presbyterian.
The converted quarterback is one of 10 players nationwide to have brought two kicks back this season – joining fellow South Atlantic Conference players Justin Houston (Tusculum) and Dimitri Holmes (Mars Hill).
Williams leads the country with an average of 35.8 yards per kickoff return.
The Eagles close out the regular season Saturday against Wingate with a 1 p.m. kick. Pregame coverage begins at noon with the AEC Tailgate Show on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
