AUSTIN, Texas – For the first time since 2017, multiple Eagles have been named to CoSIDA's Academic All-District Team, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
Offensive lineman Jesse West and defensive lineman Nick Owens were tabbed for their efforts on the field and in the classroom.
The 2021 Academic All-District® Football Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes football honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First- and second-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in mid-December.
Jesse West becomes Carson-Newman's first offensive lineman to be recognized since Stokes Rowe in 2017. Owens is the first defensive lineman since Phalen Booker garnered recognition in 2016.
Owens is a physics major with a 3.59 GPA. West is a double major in communications and religion carrying a 3.87 GPA.
Owens finished the year with 19 tackles. He topped out with four stops against Barton and finished the year with three tackles for loss.
West finished the year with the second-best grade on the offensive line. He had a winning grade (85 or above on Jay Guillermo's scale) in six of C-N's 10 contests
West graded out with 91s against Catawba and Limestone, two of the three highest grades of the year on C-N's offensive line.
