Lads seal first win paired with shutout

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (1-3, 1-0 SAC) men's soccer team toppled conference foe Catawba (2-4, 0-2 SAC) 3-0 for its first win and first shutout of the season.

"It was a good performance," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said, "and a good result."

The match went into halftime scoreless. The Eagles were awarded a penalty kick 12 minutes into the second half when Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) was taken out by the keeper on a breakaway.

Junior Robert Wagner (London, England) stepped up to take the penalty and slammed it into the back of the net putting C-N up by one.

C-N received a red card a minute later forcing it to play a man down for the remaining 32 minutes.

Dominik Gronwald (Germany) coming in off the bench gave C-N a two goal lead in the 60th minute off a pass inside the 18-yard box from Staalby.

"There were some great decisions made," Coach Moodie said, "by our coaching staff with the substitutions."

Three minutes later, Gronwald took a free kick for the Eagles. Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) got on the end of the kick and headed the ball into the side netting.

The Eagles outshot the Indians 16 to five and five to two in shots on goal.

"The result," Coach Moodie said, "went the right way."

The men head next to Trevecca Nazarene for a 2 p.m. kick off on Wednesday.
