Eagles seek reclamation after last year's post-season loss

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After being eliminated at home in the first round of the conference tournament, the Carson-Newman (5-6-2, 4-2-2 SAC) men's soccer team has a chance at redemption against Mars Hill (6-6, 6-2 SAC) tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

In the SAC quarterfinal match last year, the Lions knocked the Eagles out with a 1-0 final; Gregg Munn scored the winning goal in the 18th minute. A minute later, the Lads' starting keeper received a red card and C-N played the remainder of the match a man down.

The Lads advanced to the NCAA tournament went on to finish second in the nation.

In regular season last year, the Eagles came home with a 2-1 victory. MHU took the lead with a goal by Felipe Ferraro in the 30th minute. Now senior Kristian Speake (United Kingdom) tied it up with three minutes left in the first half. With less than a minute left in regular time, now senior Nico Noll (Germany) scored the game winner assisted by Sindre Welo (Norway).

The Eagles are coming off a hard 2-1 loss to Coker last Saturday. C-N went down a goal thirty minutes into the match; junior center back Rurik Pereira (Brazil) tied the match up at ones in the 65th. Seven minutes later, Coker scored its second goal that would result in the game-winner.

Mars Hill defeated Coker 3-2 in double overtime. The Cobras took the lead 10 minutes in; the Lions tied it up in the 23rd with a goal by Brayan Yrio, and took a 2-1 lead 19 minutes later thanks to Alex Mullen. Coker tied it back up at twos in the 73rd. With less than a minute left in the second overtime period, Yrio scored the golden goal to win the match.

The Lions and Eagles have experienced varying results against the same opponents throughout this season. Mars Hill lost 4-0 at Wingate and 2-1 to Newberry; the Eagles fell 2-1 at Wingate and defeated Newberry 7-3. MHU defeated Tusculum 1-0 and Lincoln Memorial 2-1 while C-N tied the Pioneers 1-1 and LMU 2-2.
