SAC play continues for Lady Eagles with trek to Brevard

Carson-Newman Women's Basketball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – With a week full of road trips, the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (13-1, 7-1 South Atlantic) make the short journey to the Brevard Tornados (2-9, 1-7 SAC) Wednesday evening for a 6 p.m. tip-off.

Over the last two games, the Lady Eagles have forced 36 turnovers against Mars Hill and 27 miscues against Queens including 20 first half turnovers in the first half.

"We'll look at how they are going to press break," head coach Mike Mincey said. "We may change up [the press] for Wednesday. Nonetheless it's going to be the same type of tempo. We need to go back and watch the first half because I like the way they shot out of transition. When you play that way, I think it's really fun."

Conversely, Carson-Newman turned it over just 10 times on Saturday marking the fewest miscues by a Lady Eagle group since February 18, 2012 when Carson-Newman turned it over 10 times.

The biggest contributing factor has been the play of junior point guard Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.). Over the last six games, McLaughlin has scored in double figures in five of the six while averaging 11.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game with an assist-to-turnover ratio of near 2-to-1.

Against Queens, McLaughlin moved to ninth place on the school's all-time assist list bringing her total to 292.

For the 17th, Carson-Newman and Brevard will face each other with the Lady Eagles's lone loss coming at Brevard on January 5, 2011 in a 81-69 Tornados victory.

Last season Carson-Newman won 73-62 at Brevard on February 17 as sophomore forward Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) led three players in double figures with 16 points and six rebounds.

Brevard has won just one game in the last month, but the Tornados have two players in the top-five in the conference in scoring in Katie Williams (14.1) and Madison Lenox (13.9). The duo has attempts more than half of the team's shots, 368 of 622, this season.

Despite having two of the top scorers in the conference, the Tornados are 11th out of 12 teams in points per game at 57.3 while yielding 67.4 and allowing their opponents to make 41 percent of field goal attempts.

Wednesday's game will be broadcast on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station 106.3 WPFT-FM or by visiting cneagles.com/live as coverage begins at 5:45 with "The AEC Countdown to Tip-Off".
