C-N hangs on in the Palmetto State 53-50 over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Carson-Newman (14-3, 8-3 South Atlantic Conference) held Newberry (12-5, 8-3 SAC) without a point for a six-minute span in the second half while the Eagles whipped out a 23-2 run to turn an 11-point deficit into a 10-point lead en route to a 53-50 win over the Wolves Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.

The win breaks a tie with the Wolves for third place in the South Atlantic Conference standings.

The Wolves strolled out of the gates in the second half on a 12-2 run to take an 11-point lead; however, with 15:35 left in the second half, the Eagles started to make their move.

Kailyn Brooks (Lafayette, Tenn.) canned a three to bring the Eagles' deficit inside 10 points.  When the Eagles' wrapped up their 23-2 spurt eight minutes later, Carson-Newman was up 47-37 with six minutes left.  Brooks had 13 of her team high 16 points during the stretch.

Newberry was 0-for-10 from the field while the Eagles' made their run and also turned it over five times.

However, the Wolves would make it a game that came down to the final moments.  Newberry brought the deficit down to a single point on a 6-0 run during the game's final two minutes.  However, two Lacy Miller (Dandridge, Tenn.) free throws with 13 seconds left helped push the lead to the final margin.

A Samantha Creed three and Hayley Lepaio putback for the Wolves both clanged off the rim and Jecca Simerly (Morristown, Tenn.) grabbed C-N's final rebound for the Eagles' to clinch the win.

The Eagles shot 43 percent from the field and 38 percent from three. Carson-Newman started started the day 1-for-9 from beyond the arc, but finished by hitting five of their last seven threes.

Brooks led C-N with 16 points.  That's now back-to-back games she's been the Eagles' leading scorer.  Brooks was 6-for-14 from the field and 4-for-8 from three-point range.  She also snatched six boards.

Miller was the Eagles' only other double-digit scorer.  She finished with 10 points.

Carson-Newman limited the Wolves to 34 percent shooting, including 2-for-17 shooting from three-point range.

Lepaio led the Wolves with a double-double.  She dropped 20 points and grabbed 10 caroms.  Zara Pearson added 14 points for Newberry.

Newberry did not have a point off the bench, compared to C-N's 16 bench points.  The Eagles coughed it up 20 times to 14 turnovers for the Wolves.

The Eagles return home Wednesday for a battle for second place with Anderson.  Tipoff with the Trojans is set for 6 p.m.  Pregame coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starts at 5:45 with the Appalachian Electric Cooperative Countdown to Tipoff on Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
