Trying to stop skid, Lady Eagles host Tornados

Carson-Newman Women's Basketball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Looking to stop a four-game losing streak, the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (15-7, 9-7 South Atlantic Conference) play host to the Brevard Tornados (6-13, 5-11 SAC) Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.

During the current skid, Carson-Newman has had a tough time rebounding. Throughout the season the Lady Eagles have had a positive rebounding margin having outrebounded the opponent 11 times. In those games, head coach Mike Mincey's group is 9-2.

Conversely, Carson-Newman is 5-5 when the opponent corrals more rebounds. Over the last four games, Carson-Newman is being outrebounded by an average of 11 boards per game while allowed 18.5 offensive rebounds a night.

"We're just not doing the little things," Mincey said. "Until we get those things corrected, we're not going to win basketball games. I think they understand that. We're all hurting because we don't like to lose. That's not what we are in it for. It's just not going our way right now."

Carson-Newman and Brevard hit the court for the 18th time as Carson-Newman has won 15 of the 17 previous meetings, but the Tornados captured the most recent contest, a 77-76 overtime win on January 14.

Katie Williams, the third-leading scorer in the SAC, banked a 25-foot three-pointer from the left wing as the buzzer sounded in regulation to tie the score and send the game to overtime.

Brevard made 6 of 8 foul shots in the extra session to hold on to a victory as the Lady Eagles failed to get a shot off on their final possession.

Carson-Newman went 5-for-33 in the contest missing all 16 attempts in the first half and not converting from distance until freshman forward Allison Hodge (Blaine, Tenn.) hit a shot with 5:43 to play in the game.

Along with Williams's 17.7 points per game, Madison Lenox ranks fifth in the conference in points per night with 15.3.

The Tornados enter Wednesday night's game having won four straight contests thanks to increased ability to take care of the basketball. Brevard is averaging just 12 turnovers per game over its last four after averaging 18 per outing to start the season.

Brevard has won just one conference road game this season, a 58-48 victory at Queens on December 13. Away from home this year, Brevard is averaging 56.2 points per game compared to 70.8 in home contests.

Wednesday's game will be broadcast on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station 106.3 WPFT-FM or in high definition by visiting cneagles.com/live as coverage begins at 5:45 with "The AEC Countdown to Tip-Off". Michael Wottreng and volleyball coach Dan Ahiers will have the call for the Eagle Sports Network.
