SALEM, Va.— The Carson-Newman indoor track and field team wrapped up competition at the Roanoke College Finn Pincus Invitational Saturday afternoon claiming four first-place finishes and 11 top-10 tallies across a large of competition at one of the nation's better track and field facilities.
Picking up wins for the Eagles throughout the weekend was T.J. Davis (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in the men's long jump, Kevin Snead (Richmond, Va.) in the men's 60 meter dash and Tiana Mills (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in both the women's long and triple jumps.
Davis tallied a career second-best leap of 7.23 meters in the long jump and led a pack of three C-N athletes who finished in the top-10 in the event. Behind Davis were both Kristopher Potts-Howard (Tullahoma, Tenn.) and Ray Artybridge (Iva, S.C.) as the former recorded a 5th-place mark of 6.92 meters and the latter finished off with a 6th-place tally of 6.74 meters.
Davis's career, and season-long, indoor best of 7.24 meters at the ETSU Track & Field Invitational on Jan. 13 is currently the 13th-best in all of Division II.
Snead's 6.88 second 60 meter time is the first recorded time of the season for the senior in the event and was good enough to take home the gold and a provisional qualification. Timontrez Eady (Duval County, Fla.) came in closely behind in third with a 7.03 second time while Noah Hill (Nashville, Tenn.) concluded the event with an eighth-place time of 7.20 seconds.
With the first-recorded time of the season for Snead in the 60 meter dash, the three-time All-American sits just outside the top-30 in the nation. The Richmond, Va. native ran a career-best, and C-N record, 6.77 seconds at the UCS Invitational on Feb. 20 of last season to pave his way to the 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Christian Stumpf (Johnson City, Tenn.), who has already provisionally qualified, also picked up a second-place finish of 1.96 meters in the men's high jump.
The women's sector was highlighted by two first-place tallies in the long and triple jumps by Mills, who has also already provisionally qualified in both events. The senior matched her season-best in the long jump with a 5.70 meter marking and posted an 11.50 mark in the triple.
Freshman Shelby Reynolds also notched top-10 placings in both events on the weekend.
"T.J. Davis had four jumps over 7.20 which is more than he had in his whole life," C-N jumpers coach Tyler Stepp said. "He had a great meet. Really happy with the way our jumpers competed. Tiana won both of her events while matching a season-best in the long jump. Really good day all around for horizontal leaps."
Carson-Newman will return to competition on Feb. 18th as a select few of the Carson-Newman track and field athletes will venture back down to Winston Salem, N.C. to compete in the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast track.
