Mills picks up two wins as Eagles open season at L-R Southside Power & Fitness Invitational

HICKORY, N.C.— The Carson-Newman track and field team kicked off the outdoor season in style with five first-place finishes at the Lenoir-Rhyne Southside Power & Fitness Invitational Saturday afternoon as the meet in Hickory, N.C. served as the lid-lifter to the new campaign.

C-N coach David Needs fielded a full lineup throughout the day on Saturday as the entire team made the trek to compete for the first time on the year at a familiar facility on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne. Both men and women's teams saw athletes competing in a multitude of events in preparation for the conference meet that is only three weeks away in mid-April.

Leading the pack of a strong showing of Eagles were four athletes who corralled top-finishes on the day in their respected events. Senior Tiana Mills (Chattanooga, Tenn.) tallied two first-place showings on the day while fellow senior T.J. Davis (Chattanooga, Tenn.), and sophomores Christian Stumpf (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Kristofer Potts-Howard (Tullahoma, Tenn.) also locked up blue ribbons.

Mills placed first in both the long and triple jumps as the experienced Eagle looks to claim yet another Southeast Region honor in the events to cap a successful career in Mossy Creek. In the long jump, Mills leaped 5.52 meters to be ahead of the pack while later in the afternoon the senior recorded an 11.49 meter jump in the triple.

Aside from her two routine events, Mills also competed in a number of other field events that included both the discus throw and high jump.

Davis began the outdoor campaign with a solid mark of 7.04 meters in the men's long jump to take home the top prize. The senior is coming off an indoor campaign where he just missed out on a trip to the national stage following a season's best leap of 7.24 meters at the Buccaneer Invitational.

Three other Eagles, including Potts-Howard, Ray Artybridge (Iva, S.C.) and Timontrez Eady, also recorded top-10 marks in the event as well.

Stumpf picked up right where he left off in the indoor campaign with a first-place mark of 2.00 meter sin the men's high jump. The sophomore recorded an indoor-best 2.07 meters at the East Tennessee State University Track & Field Invitational in early January and finished the indoor sector ranked in the nation's top-25.

The multi athlete also picked up a second-place finish in the men's javelin throw with a 47.77 meter recording.

Carson-Newman's other top-finisher on the day was Potts-Howard in the men's triple jump as the sophomore recorded a field's best 13.96 meters in the event. The second-year athlete is coming off another Southeast Regional selection for the event in the indoor sector. Davis also recorded a top-five finish in the event on the day.

In all, Carson-Newman saw 20 athletes post top-five times or markings on the day as the team looks to progress towards the meet that truly matters at that same facility, the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Meet.

The Eagles will be back in action Friday just 30 minutes down the road at the University of Tennessee for the Tennessee Rust Busters. Stay tuned into cneagles.com for continual coverage of the Carson-Newman outdoor track and field team all season long.
