WINSTON SALEM, N.C.—Carson-Newman began the 2016-17 indoor track and field season with a bang as four Eagles reeled in top-10 finishes on Saturday when C-N wrapped up competition at the JDL Kickoff Classic.

"It was a big meet and we were a little rusty. We need to continue to improve," C-N coach David Needs said. "We had some kids who placed well but none of them are where they want to be. It was a technique-driven day."

Highlighting the solid day of competition for the Eagles was Tanner Stepp (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and T.J. Davis (Chattanooga, Tenn.) with top-five placings in the men's high and long jumps. The former came in a four-way tie for second place with a 2.00m leap in the high jump while the latter posted the third-best mark of 7.08m in the long jump.

Both Marshall Shank (Granite Quarry, N.C.) and Tiana Mills (Chattanooga, Tenn.) brought home sixth-place finishes in their events. The sophomore Shank tallied a 4.30m mark in the men's pole vault while Mills's mark of 11.42m nearly broke into the top-five in the women's triple jump.

Mills was the lone C-N woman to register a top-10 showing.

Other notable days for Carson-Newman included Sarah Sharp (Lewis Center, Ohio) who completed the women's 800 meter in 2:31.24. Both Luke Greer (Northampton, United Kingdom) and Amos Korir ( Eldorett, Kenya) picked up top-20 finishes in the men's 3,000m while Anthony Jackson (Manchester, Tenn.) finished 17th in the men's 800m run.

"We had some kids who ran hard. Noah Hill ran a personal-best in the 60 meters and I was really proud of him. Luke Greer looked good running in the 3000 meters. Madison Pickel looked good in the 60 meters as well and today was the first time either of them competed in those events," Needs said. "Some of our young kids had a chance to compete and did alright. Today was a chance to see how the guys took the training.

"Today we saw how crucial some of the fundamental things are in our sport. Little mistakes in track and field can hurt you more than most sports," Needs said. "I'm glad this is the first meet, because we can improve a whole lot. You always want to be better than where you are at any given time. Overall, it was a great stepping stone towards what we can be."

Carson-Newman will take the Christmas holiday off before returning back to action on Jan. 13 at East Tennessee State University.
