Carson-Newman track and field sets a quick pace in day one of the NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- Makanakaishe Charamba rewrites history during the first day of NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Makanakaishe Charamba ran in the men's 60-meter prelims this afternoon at 3:25 p.m. The Eagle placed eighth in 6.75 seconds. The men's 60-meter dash finals will be held tomorrow at 4:10 p.m. Charamba was selected to attend the national meet for two separate events. He secured his ticket to the championships with a 6.72-second performance in the 60-meter dash as well as a 20.99-second seed time in the 200-meter dash.

Charamba raced in the 200-meter dash preliminary event at 5:20 p.m. this afternoon where he placed first in 20.66, a new personal record. His time marks a new facility record for the Virginia Beach Sports Center. Charamba also secured the second fastest time in NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships history and third fastest time in Division II history for the event. Charamba will race tomorrow in the finals at 5:40 p.m.

Sade De Sousa kicked off the championships for the Eagles as she raced in the women's 60-meter dash prelims at 3:15 p.m. De Sousa finished in sixth with a time of 7.41 seconds. De Sousa was afforded this opportunity because of her 7.41-second seed time in the event at the VMI Invitational earlier this season. The women's 60-meter dash finals will begin tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.

Kadidja Sangare competed in the women's long jump finals at 4:00 p.m. Sangare was selected to attend the national meet for her 6.00-meter seed mark in the event earlier this season. Her efforts this afternoon afforded her an eleventh-place spot in the nation which earned her second team All-American honors. Sangare finished the event with a 5.83-meter jump and is the first female long jump All-American in Carson-Newman track and field history.
