Moore makes history during day one of Texas Relays

Devon Moore 100m prelims

Makanakaishe Charamba 100m timed finals

AUSTIN, Texas- Devon Moore placed first in round one of the men's 100-meter dash this afternoon, Mar. 31. Moore ran the event in 9.99 seconds, a feat accomplished only 172 times now in the history of track and field.

"Today was a very good day. The results we saw were a testament to some really hard work and some great coaching. Devon Moore ran against the best in the country, regardless of division. He told us he was going to run a fast one today, and he did. One thing I can say about Devon is that he shows up for big races, and he did that today," head track and field coach David Needs said.

Devon Moore finished the first round of the men's 100-meter dash in 9.99 seconds. Moore's time was a mere .07 seconds off the nine-time Olympic gold medal winner Carl Lewis. Lewis ran the 100-meter dash for the United States in 9.92 seconds during the 1988 Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal in the event.

If Moore had run a 9.99-second 100-meter dash in 1968, he would have held the world record. Although no world record at this time, Moore's sub-10 second performance secured a national qualifying time in the event. Moore raced in the men's 100-meter dash invitational event, and he will race again tomorrow in the 100-meter dash finals.

"It's important to mention that there are two separate wind standards in outdoor track and field. In order to qualify for world events, the wind has to read under 2.0 meters per second, but to qualify for NCAA championships, the wind only has to read under 4.0 meters per second. Devon's race qualified under NCAA standards. Makanakaishe Charamba, though, was wind legal for both standards, and I would be remiss not to mention how incredibly well he raced today," Needs said.

Makanakaishe Charamba competed in the men's timed section of the 100-meter dash. Charamba placed first in 10.15 seconds.

"Sade broke the school record today. We are so proud of her continued growth, and it was great to see such an exceptional performance from her against this level of competition," Needs said.

Sade De Sousa raced in the women's 100-meter dash timed section, and she finished fourth in 11.48.

"Our relay did well today. We had a little bit of a rough handoff, and we can't make those mistakes against competition like Kentucky or Clemson. However, I'm proud of where we finished in our heat. We definitely look at that performance as a positive from the day," Needs said.

Moore and Charamba raced with Siphosethu Boya and Ashwin Jood in the first round of the men's 4x100-meter event. The quartet placed 25th with a time of 40.37. The Eagles placed fifth within their heat.

In the men's 110-meter hurdles timed event, Matthew Blackmon finished 40th in 14.57.

"Overall, it was a great day for our athletes and an awesome day for the program. We raced against some of the very best, and we got to see two of our own at the top of the sprint board," Needs said.

Moore will race tomorrow in the 100-meter dash final at 4:25 p.m. Stay up to date on cneagles.com.
