JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (1-1) connected on just one field goal in the final 13 minutes while Lander (2-0) reeled off a 16-0 run to beat the Eagles' 73-65 Saturday night at Holt Fieldhouse.

Carson-Newman led 51-38 with 13 minutes left in the second half following a Carson Brooks (Knoxville, Tenn.) layup.  Brooks would hit another layup with four minutes remaining to snap a nine minute field goal drought.  The Eagles wouldn't score from the field the rest of the game.

"Foul troubles got us," head coach Chuck Benson said. "Charles Clark played sparingly in the second half, and we missed too many shots at the rim.  Carson, Sawyer and Mason have to finish at the rim.  You tie that in with turnovers and you're doomed."

Charles Clark (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led Carson-Newman with 20 points, his fifth consecutive 20-point game dating back to last season.  However, Clark only saw the floor for 10 minutes in the second half.

Brooks added 14 points and Sawyer Williams added 10.

The Eagles connected on just five of their 22 second-half shot attempts and finished the period shooting 23 percent from the field.

"There was contact at times around the basket that could have led to free throws but didn't today," Benson said. "That was the way the game was being officiated and we didn't adjust mentally. We complained and whined, but we didn't adjust.  This is a learning experience for us."

Carson-Newman struggled to contain the Bearcats' two-headed monster of Tobiasz Hose and JR Washington.  The duo combined for 45 points, led by Washington's 24 and Hose's 21.

Lander outscored Carson-Newman off turnovers 21-8.  The Eagles coughed it up 16 times.

C-N is back at home for another nonconference contest Wednesday against Johnson C. Smith. Tipoff with the Golden Bulls is set for 7.  Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starts at 6:45 on Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
