AUSTIN, Texas – Carson-Newman men's basketball forward Sawyer Williams (Owenton, Ky.) has been named to the Southeast Region Academic All-District team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
This is the first such accolade for Williams and the first academic all-district selection for head coach Chuck Benson.
"We're so proud of Sawyer," head coach Chuck Benson said. "He exemplifies what it means to be an Eagle. He's tenacious both on the floor and in the classroom."
Williams is studying biology with an eye on the veterinary sciences post-graduation. He carries a 3.33 GPA.
A champion goat farmer and NABC AllState Good Works team nominee, Williams is Carson-Newman's second leading scorer. He averages 16.6 points per game to go along with 7.1 boards per game.
The junior from Owenton, Ky., is joined on the all-district team by fellow SAC athletes Keith Griffin of Wingate and Valentine Bauer of Mars Hill. Williams is the second-leading scorer on the all-district team behind Young Harris' CJ Wilson, who averages 22.3 points per game.
Williams and the rest of the Eagles will be on display Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne. Tipoff from Shuford Memorial Gym is slated for 4 p.m. Pregame coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starts at 3:45 with the AEC Countdown to Tipoff on Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live
