Carson-Newman Men's Soccer Cruises Past Brevard, 6-0

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Sophomore forward Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, England) tallied two goals in leading the Carson-Newman men's soccer team to a 6-0 win over Brevard in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday night at McCown Field.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-1-1 overall and 2-0 in SAC play. The Tornados fall to 1-6 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

"We played extremely well in the first half and made the game a lot easier for us from there on out," C-N head coach Allen Vital said. "It was a good team win."

C-N dominated possession on Saturday, outshooting Brevard 24-10, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Junior forward Ben Backstrom (Knoxville, Tenn.) put the Eagles on the board early as he fired a shot past Brevard goalkeeper Jack Shaw (Simpsonville, S.C.) in the 21st minute to give C-N a 1-nil lead. Richard Marquetty (New York, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.

C-N pushed its lead to 2-0 less than a minute later. Freshman midfielder Daniel Tackling (Norwich, Conn.) sliced through the Tornados' defense and found the back of the net in the 22nd minute.

Freshman defender Adam Thomas (Morristown, Tenn.) finished off a pass from Hill in the 34th minute to give C-N a 3-0 advantage.

Hill then scored the first of his two goals in the 41st minute to give the Eagles a 4-0 cushion heading into the locker room. Freshman Daniel Zitt (Morristown, Tenn.) was credited with the assist on the goal.

Vital was pleased with his team's strong first half, as the Eagles outshot Brevard 15-2.

"We knew we had to come out and be aggressive," Vital said. "We were fortunate we got the goals this time. We were able to finish the opportunities. When you play the way played (in the first half), it makes the game easy."

The Eagles came out firing to begin the second half, as Hill scored his second goal in the 49th minute to push C-N's lead to 5-nil.

Forward Marcello Roberts (Gainesville, Fla.) scored C-N's final goal of the night on a header in the 81st minute, giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

C-N returns to the pitch on Tuesday in a home match against King College. The match is slated to start at 6 p.m. at McCown Field.
