Aiken, S.C. - The USC Aiken Men's Soccer Team (4-3-0) didn't let
the wet weather dampen their spirits as the Pacers defeated the
visiting Eagles of Carson-Newman College (4-2-1) by a 4-3 margin
Saturday night at Pacer Pit. The match went into a rain delay at
the 85:15 mark, and after severe weather lingered in the area, the
contest was called in favor of USCA.
Aiken struck with its first goal just 4:27 into the match. Fernando
Gamez (Sinaloa, MEXICO) was able to settle a rebound off a shot by
Brett Van Pelt (Aiken, S.C.) and place the ball past the C-N
goalkeeper.
Gamez scored his second goal of the half to put the Pacers up 2-0
with 2:42 left in the half with a rifle of a shot from 35 yards
out.
Carson-Newman would answer just 1:35 later as junior Richard
Marquetty (New York, N.Y.) served up a cross that sophomore Robert
Hill (Middlesbrough, ENGLAND) headed home for a 2-1 halftime
margin.
After the break, junior Matthew Finlay (Liverpool, ENGLAND) hit the
equalizer early in the 55th minute.
USC Aiken's Troy Watson (Kingston, JAMAICA) gave the Pacers their
second lead of the contest at 3-2, when he stole the ball from the
defense and broke away to find the right-upper 90 for the
score.
Finlay scored his second goal of the match less than two minutes
later (65:31). The Liverpudlian received a free kick from the foot
of freshman Daniel Tackling (Norwich, Conn.) that he hit into the
net to knot the match at three goals apiece.
Watson picked up the match-winner for Aiken just 2:18 before the
rain delay ensued with a rocket from 45 yards away that kissed the
crossbar on its way to the back of the net.
Andray Charles (St. George's, GRENADA) picked up the win in goal
for the Pacers stopping five shots in just over 67 minutes of work.
Junior Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.) went the distance for
C-N with five saves despite the loss.
Carson-Newman will return to the pitch Wednesday night when it
takes on South Atlantic Conference rival Lincoln Memorial
University at McCown Field. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
