No. 24 Anderson Eliminates No. 16 Carson-Newman From NCAA Tournament with 2-1 Win

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Second-seeded Anderson scored two first-half goals and held off third-seeded Carson-Newman for a 2-1 victory in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Tournament on Friday afternoon at Avery High School.

With the win, the Trojans (13-2-3) advance to the Southeast Regional finals, where they will face the winner of top-seeded Lees-McRae and Wingate on Sunday at 2 p.m. Carson-Newman’s season comes to an end at 14-5-1.

The Eagles fell despite outshooting Anderson 18-9, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Anderson tallied its first goal less than nine minutes into the match, as Lasse Sohrweide found the back of the net to give the Trojans a 1-nil lead.

The Trojans added to their lead in the 41st minute, as Dan Bowers scored a goal to give Anderson a 2-0 advantage heading into the locker room.

The Eagles battled back in the second half and trimmed Anderson’s lead to 2-1 on Adam Thomas’ (Morristown, Tenn.) goal in the 68th minute, but the Trojans held off a late flurry of shots by C-N to pick up the win.

C-N junior goalkeeper Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.) went the distance in goal for the Eagles and finished with one save, while Anderson keeper Lukas Hesse collected seven saves to earn the win.
