SALISBURY, N.C. – Senior Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) tallied two second half goals and junior Tom Read (London, England) added a goal and three assists as the Carson-Newman men's soccer team (8-2-1, 5-2 SAC) scored four second half goals to beat the Catawba Indians (4-7, 2-5 SAC) Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference contest at Frock Athletic Complex.
Welo scored the game-winner in the 86th-minute that was assisted by Read to seal the Eagles' comeback. Carson-Newman has now won two-straight contest against Catawba and is 21-13-1 all-time.
Read's three assist was the first time an Eagle contributed to three goals since Brad Collins did so against North Greenville on Sept. 15th, 2004.
"It was one of the nitty, gritty conference wins that teams see every week. It was one of those games you see as a player and a coach that you just hope to win. We were clinical on set pieces and Tom was great today. We just hope to get back to full strength this week," coach Richard Moodie said.
Catawba scored the lone goal in the first 45-minute stanza. Kenny Bonilla scored his fifth goal of the year after Bobby Cardelle sent a cross from the right side towards the net and Bonilla beat goalkeeper Kavi Luchowa (London, England) to put the Indians up 1-0 at the half.
The first 25 minutes of second half play featured five goals on just nine shots.
Carson-Newman responded 11 minutes after the break with Read's goal. Read beat Catawba keeper Christian Watts to tie the contest at 1-1. Read now has three goals on the season.
Eight minutes after Read's goal, the Eagles scored to go ahead 2-1. Read sent a corner kick into the box that found the head of junior Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) in the box and Staalby buried his shot to give the Orange and Blue a 2-1 lead. The Norwegian's goal was his fourth of the season and goal number nine of his career.
Just 57 seconds later, Catawba found the equalizer in the 65th-minute. Brian Woulfe sent in a corner to Phiilpp Hollenhorst's head and his header beat Luchowa to make the score 2-2. Hollenhorst's goal was his third of the season. Following the score, Woulfe picked up his second yellow card and was sent off and forced Catawba to play with 10-men the final 25 minutes.
Carson-Newman responded almost immediately in the 69th-minute. The Eagles very next corner kick was once again sent in by Read that found the head of Welo who was able to beat Watts and regain the Eagles' one-goal advantage.
Catawba's goal in the 70th-minute capped the scoring frenzy. Bradley Dowdall beat Luchowa on a shot to equalize once again and make the score 3-3 heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
A foul and yellow card given to Catawba's Matt Wilkinson set up a free kick for the Eagles in the 86th-minute. Read stood over the free kick and sent a line drive into the box that Welo was able to flick over the keeper Watts and find the back of the net for the eventual game-winner and C-N possessed a 4-3 lead.
The Indians were unable to muster a shot during the final four-plus minutes of play and the Eagles escaped Salisbury with the win.
Carson-Newman's four goals in the second half was the second time the Eagles have tallied four times in 45 minutes in 2015; C-N also scored four times during the second half on the road at Belmont Abbey.
Welo has now scored in three-consecutive contests and has six goals on the year to lead the team. His goal in the 86th-minute was the Norwegian's sixth game-winning goal in his career and moves him one-score closer to the school-record 12 game-winners owned by Dario Carrasco. The senior has 25 career goals in the Orange and Blue and is now tied with Brad Cobbs for sixth all-time in goal scoring in Carson-Newman history.
Luchowa conceded three goals and made three saves in the win; he now has eight wins on the year. Watts allowed four goals while making just two saves in the loss.
Carson-Newman outshot Catawba 13 to six, including 10 shots in the second half. Also in the second half, the Eagles had eight corners and converted two of the set pieces into goals.
The Eagles remain in second-place in the SAC with 15 points, while Catawba fell to a tie for eighth with six points in the table.
Carson-Newman returns to McCown Field for the first time in five contests as it host the No. 19 Young Harris Mountain Lions on Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m.
