BRISTOL, Tenn. – Propelled by two second half goals, the No. 13 Carson-Newman men's soccer team (11-2-1) knocked off the King Tornado (5-6-2) 3-1 Wednesday afternoon at Parks Field in Bristol, Tenn as the Eagles conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule.
Junior Tom Read tallied the game-winning goal and added two assists in the win, while freshman Bruno Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) each added a score in the win.
"We didn't play well at all today and King made it difficult for us, so we really had to work hard and grind out the result," assistant coach David Campbell said. "We are happy to get the win and can now focus on Saturday's game against Brevard."
Andrade opened the scoring for the Eagles in the sixth-minute. Andrade took a cross from Read to the right side of the 18-yard box and whipped a shot to the back of the net past Kari Sveinsson for his second score of the season. The goal was Andrade's second of his career and his first score since Sept. 9th when the freshman scored in the second half against Belmont Abbey.
King found the equalizer in the 34th-minute on a counter-attack. Eli Carrasco beat goalkeeper Kavi Luchowa (London, England) into the far left corner to tie the score at 1-1; Alfred Schwab assisted the goal. The game was tied after the first 45 minutes of play concluded.
Read gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead five minutes into second half play. Read took a through ball from senior Rurik Pereira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and made a run into the right side of the box and beat Sveinsson to his right for the 2-1 C-N advantage.
Staalby doubled the Carson-Newman advantage in the 73rd-minute. Staalby took a through ball from Read that was sent from the near the midfield stripe to the top of the 18-yard box. The junior beat his marker towards the penalty shot and slotted his shot into the right corner to push the lead to 3-1, which was the final score. Staalby has six goals on the season, which is a career-high for goals in a season.
The Eagles outshot the Tornado 21-8 with 10 of C-N's shots landing on frame. Three of King's eight shots were on frame. Luchowa made two saves in 90 minutes of play, while Sveinsson conceded three goals and made seven saves.
Read led Carson-Newman with seven shots, which was the most by a player since Joao Pedro Dowsley registered seven shots against Lincoln Memorial last season. Andrade, senior Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway), senior Lucas Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Pereira each had two shots for the Eagles. Carrasco and Luis Calderon had three shots each for King.
Read now has tallied at least four points in three of his last four contests; the juniors is the first Eagle to put together three four-point performances since Ross Frame did so in 2013 against King, Brevard and Lenoir-Rhyne.
Carson-Newman is now 17-3-3 all-time against King and remain undefeated in Bristol with a 9-0-1 mark.
The Eagles return to Jefferson City for their final home contest of the season as they host the Brevard Tornados on Saturaday evening at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Day as Carson-Newman honors its 11 seniors.
