Read, Welo named to NSCAA All-Region teams

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Carson-Newman senior defender Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) and junior forward Tom Read (London, England) were each bestowed their second All-Southeast Region accolade of the week as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced its All-Region teams on Wednesday.

Welo claimed his second first team honor of the week after being named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association squad on Tuesday; Read's inclusion is also his second such honor after being named a second team forward by the D2CCA. The duo are the first two Carson-Newman players on the NSCAA All-Southeast Region Team since 2013 when Ross Frame and Rumwald Le Guevel were etched to the squad.

Welo is appearing on his fourth-career All-Region team after being named second team All-Southeast Region by the NSCAA and Daktronics during the 2013 season while Read's inclusion to the second team was his first All-Region honor.

Welo ended his career as the most-capped player in Carson-Newman history by appearing 77 games during his four years at Mossy Creek. During his senior campaign, the Norwegian tallied nine goals, which led the team, and an assist and was named a first team All-South Atlantic Conference center back. As a defender, he ranked third on the team with 27 shots. Welo tallied his fourth multi-goal game of his career against Catawba on Oct. 10th and his penalty kick against Coker on Oct. 31stclinched Carson-Newman a share of the SAC regular season title.

He finished his career with 28 career goals, which was sixth-most in program history, and seven game-winning goals. Welo placed seventh in school history with his 71 career points and is tied with four other Eagles, including senior Lucas Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), for the school record with three made penalty kicks. The senior was also a member of the 2013 team that made a run to the program's first-ever NCAA Championship game.

Welo was also named a member of the first team CoSIDA Academic All-District team during the 2015 season.

Read set a new school record with 16 assists and added eight goals during his first season in the Orange and Blue and named a first-team All-SAC member. The London-native registered all 16 of his assists in the team's last 14 games. Against Catawba on Oct. 10th, Read recorded the first three-assist game by a Carson-Newman player in 11 years; he repeated the feat against Queens (N.C.) in the SAC Tournament semifinals. He led the team with 62 shots and tied for second with the eight goals.

The duo are joined by four other SAC players on the first team after Wingate placed three athletes and Lincoln Memorial's Danilo da Silva was named a forward on the first team. In total, the SAC placed 11 student-athletes on the NSCAA's three squads.
