JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 21 Carson-Newman did not trail for the first 35:33 of its second South Atlantic Conference game of the year but Newbery went 5-for-7 from the three-point line in the fourth quarter to defeat the Lady Eagles 73-69 at Holt Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.

Carson-Newman (5-2, 0-2 SAC) went 4-for-17 from the floor in the fourth quarter as Newberry (3-4, 2-0 SAC) started the fourth quarter on an 11-1 run to take its first lead of the night on a layup by Nicola Handreck with 4:27 to play.

The Lady Eagles tied the score at 60 points 1:31 later as senior forward Taylor Peterson (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) splashed a three-pointer from the top of the key. The Wolves responded with five straight and nine of the next 11 points to go ahead 69-62 with 1:03 to play in the game.

Carson-Newman would get within one possession with 20 seconds to play at 69-66 but four free throws from Samantha Creed put the game out of reach.

"This game being at home especially after how well we played against North Georgia the other night," Carson-Newman coach Mike Mincey said. "To have that lead and lead for over 33 minutes. We had an opportunity I felt like in the first half to really put a knockout punch in and we didn't do it. Had a lead of like 16 in the second quarter. We just have to be able to finish games out. You have a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter you have to be able to finish games out especially at home."

Carson-Newman started the game on a 13-3 run in the first eight minutes as Newberry began 1-for-10 from the floor and committed eight turnovers in the first quarter. The Lady Eagles went 7-for-13 from the field in the opening 10 minutes to take a 24-12 lead.

The Lady Eagles went 4-for-15 from the floor in the second quarter scoring just 11 points as Newberry closed the first half on a 7-2 run to close the gap to 35-27 heading into the locker room.

Senior guard Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) and Peterson led all scorers with nine points in the first frame. Newberry was led in scoring by Shelby Britten's seven points. The freshman had scored just two points in 33 minutes in the first six games of the year.

Newberry pulled within nine points with 6:35 to play in the third quarter when Carson-Newman quickly reeled off seven points to push the advantage to 49-33 with 4:09 on the clock. The Lady Eagles scored just two points over the next three minutes to allow the Wolves to pull within a 51-44 score as the two sides exchanged three-pointers in the final minute to make it a 54-47 game heading to the fourth quarter.

Burstrom led the Lady Eagles with 17 points on 7 of 14 shooting. Junior guard Kailyn Brooks (Lafayette, Tenn.) chipped in 15 points and five assists and Peterson finished with 12 points.

Creed led all scorers and four Newberry players in double figures with 19 points. All 19 of her points came in 18 second-half minutes after playing just four minutes in the first half. Emily Perry added 16 points while Handreck had 14 points and four assists.

"There were a lot of things in our favor," Mincey said. "The stat sheet across the board was in our favor, but yet we are sitting her with another loss in SAC play. We are 0-2. We've dug ourselves a big hole now. We will see what our character is made of and see if we can get back to business."

The Lady Eagles play their final nonconference game of the year Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C. against North Greenville. Broadcast coverage begins at 5:15 p.m. on cneagles.com/live with Matthew Osborne providing the play-by-play.
