Historic shooting day leads Bulldogs over Lady Eagles 81-65

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Wingate became the first team since 2000 to shoot 60 percent against Carson-Newman as the Bulldogs spoiled senior day for the Lady Eagles in an 81-65 victory Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.

Wingate (16-8, 13-7 South Atlantic Conference) finished the game at exactly 60 percent going 30-for-50 in the game while shooting 67 percent in the second half.

Carson-Newman (16-10, 10-10 SAC) has lost six consecutive games to Wingate in the all-time series and drops a senior day game for the fifth time in its last 14 tries as the Bulldogs win their sixth-straight game this season.

Carson-Newman took a 5-3 lead with 6:34 to play in the first quarter but did not score a point until the 1:01 mark as Wingate finished the opening quarter on an 18-3 run to take a 21-8 advantage. C-N went 3-for-14 from the floor in the opening 10 minutes.

Wingate boosted its lead to 17 points at 29-12 with 7:15 to play in the first half when Carson-Newman reeled off nine unanswered points to close the deficit to eight points. Despite the Lady Eagles going 11-for-14 at the free-throw line in the second quarter the Bulldogs were able to push the lead to double figures at 38-27 at halftime.

No one for either side scored in double digits in the first 10 minutes of play as the Bulldogs saw 10 different players score and the Lady Eagles posted seven players in the scoring column.

Wingate score the first five points of the second half and went 9-for-15 from the floor in the third quarter to see its lead balloon to 61-42 going to the fourth frame. 16 of the 23 points that the Bulldogs scored in the quarter came in the paint.

The closest the Lady Eagles would get the rest of the way was 13 points on two occasions with 4:00 and 3:25 to play in the contest but Wingate made its final six shots of the game to close out the game.

Redshirt-sophomore forward Katie Stubblefield (Alcoa, Tenn.) led the Lady Eagles with 14 points and a career-high eight rebounds.

Senior guard Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) took sole possession of fourth on the SAC's all-time made three-pointers list with a pair of triples to bring her career total to 450 as she had 12 points in the game.

Sophomore forward Abby Tinsley (Charlottesville, Va.) reached double figures in scoring for the first time in her career finishing with 10 points on 4 of 5 shooting.

Marta Miscenko led all scorers with 16 points as the sophomore made all five of her field-goal attempts in the game. Courtney Robinson tallied 15 points and seven assists while Shelby Tricoli chipped in 14 points and Alysia Hudson had 10 points.
