C-N Women's Basketball Game Notes
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Mars Hill is coming off of a win for just the fourth time this season as it takes on Carson-Newman Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in South Atlantic Conference action at Holt Fieldhouse.
C-N (13-7, 10-4) is just 19-22 over the last five seasons since coach Mike Mincey took the helm, the only month of regular season play that he has a losing record. The only season the Lady Eagles finished February with a winning record came in his first year, 2011-12, when they went 7-2.
Carson-Newman picked up its 50th victory in the all-time in the first meeting as it holds a 50-18 dominating advantage in the all-time series.
The Lady Eagles led by as many as 49 points in the first meeting this season to cruise to a 90-52 win on New Year's Eve as the Lions (4-16, 2-12) shot just 29 percent from the field.
Mika Wester posted 31 points to become the first Lady Eagle to score 30 or more points in a game since Brooke Johnson dropped 39 points in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Clayton State on March 12, 2005.
The Lions turned the ball over 28 times in the game leading to 29 points for Carson-Newman as the Lady Eagles scored 42 points in the paint.
Aliyah Farmer led the Lions in scoring with 17 points, seven rebounds and four blocks while Paige Chavis was the only other double-digit scorer finishing with 10 points and five boards.
After suffering a nine-game losing streak from the start of December to mid-January, the Lions have won two of their last four including a 55-53 triumph over Catawba on Saturday. The team is 0-10 on the road this season and have lost 12 consecutive road affairs overall with the last win coming at Queens (N.C.) on Feb. 13, 2016.
With the ball, Mars Hill ranks 300th out of 307 clubs in field-goal percentage making just 32 percent of its shots. The unit averages 54.9 points per game, second-fewest in the SAC while recording a -20.5 scoring margin to rank 300th in Division II.
The Lions are turning the ball over on average 21.5 times per game this year, 294th in the nation having the given the pumpkin away 20 or more times in 15 of the 20 contests.
Opponents are registering 75.4 points per game this year, the most versus any SAC club while MHU yields 43.6 percent from the field, 11th in the conference.
Chavis continues to lead the team in scoring ranking 10th in the league with 14.2 points per night as she posts 35.1 minutes per night, third in the SAC.
Farmer is sixth in the league with 8.3 rebounds per game and fifth in total rejections with 22. After recording double-digit boards in four of her first six games, she has not had one such contest in the last 14 nights.
