Lady Eagles await trip from Tornados Wednesday

C-N Women's Basketball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The final week of the regular season begins as Carson-Newman plays host to Brevard Wednesday evening at Holt Fieldhouse for a 6 p.m. South Atlantic Conference contest seeking to clinch a home game in next week's league championships.

Carson-Newman (17-9, 14-6) is two games clear of Newberry for fourth place in the league standings and with a win in either game this week the Lady Eagles would seal a home game next Wednesday in the SAC Championships quarterfinals.

Wednesday will likely be the final meeting between C-N and Brevard (6-18, 2-18) as the Tornados are moving to Division III. The Lady Eagles hold a commanding 19-2 advantage through 21 meetings including wins in each of the last four.

C-N won the first outing this year 92-41 at Brevard's facility going 12-for-20 from three-point range shooting 60 percent from deep for the first time since Feb. 18, 2015 at Anderson (S.C.) when it went six-for-nine, 67 percent.

The last win of 50 points or more for Carson-Newman prior to the first meeting this season came on Jan. 20, 2010 when the Lady Eagles pounded the Tornados at Boshamer Gymnasium 114-64.

The 41 points yielded by the Lady Eagles were the fewest points yielded in a road game since defeating Newberry 66-37 on Jan. 16, 1999.

Ashton Wykle played 15 minutes, all in the second half, to pile up a season-high 14 points on five of six shooting including four three-pointers. Carly Pippin and freshman guard Tori Griffin added double figures as well with 11 and 10 respectively.

Madison Lenox ended the night with 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks for Brevard and AnnaLee Bollinger added 11 for coach Donald Hudson.

Brevard started the year 4-0 in November but has won just two of its last 20 games since December began and has just one win, a 58-49 win at Queens on Feb. 4, in its last 14.

Only two teams in the nation are worse on the glass than the Tornados averaging 27 rebounds per night and being outrebounded by an average of 13 this season. Just one team in Division II posts fewer offensive boards than the six of Hudson's team.

Brevard relies on the three-pointer more than any team in the league attempting 630 three-pointers while making 7.2 per contest. However the group shoots the triple at a 30 percent clip ranking ninth in the SAC. By relying on long distance shots, no team in the league has attempted fewer foul shots than BC's 313 on the year.

On the defensive end of the floor, Brevard gives up the 11th highest field-goal percentage in the country at 45 percent.

Lenox is the conference's leader in scoring posting 20 points per night to rank 14th in nation as she places fifth in field-goal attempts at 460 and field goals made at 209. The senior is 14th in the country in defensive rebounds at eight per game.

The game will have three different broadcast options. Locally, fans can catch the game on Mountain Country 106.3 WPFT-FM. Internationally, there will be a high definition video stream and an audio link available on cneagles.com/live. Broadcast coverage begins at 4:45 p.m. with "The Appalachian Electric Cooperative Countdown to Tip-Off" on the Eagle Sports Network.
