Eagles look to stay white hot against Cavs

C-N Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (16-10, 6-0 South Atlantic Conference) rides a seven-game win streak as it looks to stay hot when UVA Wise (11-19, 1-7 SAC) comes to Mossy Creek for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at The Vick.

The Eagles have won three straight in the series with Wise and lead the all-time ledger 7-3.  The Eagles have never won more than three straight against the Highland Cavaliers in the decade the teams have been squaring off.

After starting the season 2-8, Carson-Newman has rattled off 14 wins in its last 16 games. The Eagles are hitting .359 as a team in that stretch while averaging 9.31 runs per game. The Eagles have socked 26 home runs in that stretch.  Hayden Dye has been especially prolific in the last 16. She's hitting .511 with 10 extra base hits in her 23 knocks in that stretch. Dye has driven in 26 runs during this run of good form.

Macey Hughes sits in eighth place in Carson-Newman history for career home runs with 25.  Next up on the all-time list is Lisa Rogers, who had 26 from 2003-06. Sara Kelley (2010-14) holds the program's all-time record with 35. Hughes is also top 10 all-time in RBI with 152. She sits in sixth, needing five more RBI to move into the top five all-time. Mandy Stevens occupies that spot with 157 all-time.

With 10 home runs this season, Brooke Matyasovsky leads the South Atlantic Conference in jacks. She ranks 13th nationally.  The nation's leader - Valdosta State's Abby Sulte - has 21 home runs.

Matyasovsky has been on an absolute tear to get to 10 home runs.   Matyasovsky has homered eight times in her last 28 at-bats.  That amounts to a home run in every 3.5 trips to the plate.

The Eastern Connecticut State transfer has especially been on a torrid pace in this 16 game stretch. She has 17 hits and is batting .378. Of those 17 hits, 14 are for extra bases (five doubles and nine home runs).

Freshman Trinity Brooks has rounded into form on this winning streak. She's batting .379. With 11 hits and two walks, she has scored a run 76.9 percent of the time she has reached base in the Eagles' last 16 games.

In the last 16 games, Emma Frost has a 1.30 ERA and a 6-1 record in 10 appearances with eight starts.  She's struck out 61 in 43.0 innings  against just seven walks.  Opponents are hitting just .217 off her.

Carson-Newman ranks 16th nationally and second in the SAC with 31 home runs this season.  The Eagles have hit at least one bomb in 11 of their last 13 games.  All of a sudden, Carson-Newman leads the SAC and ranks 14th nationally in scoring. The Eagles are averaging 7.08 runs per game.
