Final opportunity for a trip to NCAA's awaits C-N swimmers this weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Coach Jordan Taylor's program will make a last-ditch effort to send as many athletes as possible to the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships in the Royal Open Last Chance meet slated for two days on Feb. 15-16 from the Levine Center.

All athletes will await the weekend's results as roughly the top-26 times throughout the season in each individual event garner a place at nationals for women's athletes. On the men's side, the top-21 times provide the trip to one of the biggest stages in swimming.

With relay teams, at least one swimmer has to qualify for an individual event for the group to earn a spot at nationals.

Four women and three men represented C-N in 12 individual events through the four-day period last year, which marked a program-best in the number of selections. The group is in search of their fourth trip to nationals since its inception in 2013-14.

"I am excited about the meet this weekend," Taylor said. "In the past years it has always been very successful for us and we are coming off the back of our best ever Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship performance so I believe we will see further fast swimming this weekend too.

"The mood is great, although it is a last chance meet, there is less pressure compared with conference and so the swimmers are ready just to give it their very best and see if that will get them a trip to NCAA's."

The Eagles grabbed third-place as a team on both the men's and women's sides last week following the four-day league championships. C-N had three conference champions in Caleb Howell, CJ Jensen, and Andrei Ungur which all came in the final two days.

In total, Taylor's program earned 38 All-BMC plaudits over the four days and set themselves up for a prime opportunity to send its most swimmers to the NCAA D2 Swimming Championships. Each relay team throughout the week on both sides finished inside the top-three or better.
