    JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman volleyball coach Shannon Mincey has announced the hiring of former Eagle middle hittler Sabina Papala as a graduate assistant coach. “I look forward to working alongside Sabina,” Mincey said. “Her personality is enjoyable to work with and she is a hard worker. Her life experience will be an asset to us coming from Poland and playing for so many schools.”

    JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (11-16, 5-13 SAC) won the first set over Wingate (26-2, 16-2 SAC) 25-23, but the Bulldogs stormed back to capture the next three, picking up a four-set victory over the Eagles (23-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-13). Carson-Newman needed a victory over the conference leading Bulldogs to secure a spot in the SAC tournament.

    JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (11-15, 5-12 SAC) and Catawba (13-12, 9-8 SAC) were tied nine times in the fifth set, but a three point service run by the Indians’ Kaitlyn Whitmir broke that ninth tie and propelled Catawba to a 15-13 win in the fifth set and 3-2 win in the match (28-18, 23-25, 15-25, 25-15, 15-13).

    HICKORY, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne (17-, 9-6 SAC) used a stingy defense to hold Carson-Newman (10-14, 4-11 SAC) to a .033 attack percentage in a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-14) of the Eagles at Shuford Gymnasium. Kiayna O’Neal (Katy, Texas) and Sabina Papala (Laziska Gorne, Poland) each produced a team high nine kills.

    BREVARD, N.C. – Carson-Newman (10-13, 4-10 SAC) got a career high 14 kills from Emily Schultz (Atlanta, Ga.) as the Eagles battled back and forth with Brevard (10-15, 1-13 SAC) to come out on top in five sets (20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13) Thursday night at Boshamer Gym. It’s the second five-set match in a row the Eagles have won after losing their first five, five-setters.

    JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (9-12, 3-9 SAC) celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its Dig Pink match Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse versus Tusculum (16-10, 10-4 SAC). The Eagles will wear pink uniforms and proceeds from the night will go toward finding a cure for cancer.

The match was a meeting of the top two liberos in the South Atlantic Conference in Carson-Newman’s Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Tusculum’s Caitlyn Dean.

    MARS HILL, N.C. – Carson-Newman (9-12, 3-9 SAC) used a balanced attack and solid play from its back line of defenders to stop a five-game losing streak with a five-set (17-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13) victory over Mars Hill (12-10, 5-7 SAC). The win was the first for Carson-Newman in a five-set match in 2012.

    JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Anderson (11-12, 4-9 SAC) used a strong attack to take a three-set (25-20, 25-14, 25-19) victory over Carson-Newman (8-12, 2-9 SAC) Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse. The Trojans Shannon Gillespie was the only attacker for either team with more than 10 kills, notching 15 for AU. Gillespie finished with a .361 attack percentage.

    WINGATE, N.C. – Carson-Newman (8-10, 2-7) won the first set against Wingate (16-2, 7-2 SAC) but the Bulldogs stormed back behind a furious offensive performance to win 22-25, 31-29, 25-14, 25-17. Four Bulldogs finished with double digit kills, led by Anna Hilton’s 17 to go along with a .471 attack percentage. Wingate hit .307 as a team for the match.

However, the Eagles will need to rebound from a three-set loss to Lincoln Memorial to finish out the trip in style against Catawba (6-9, 3-4 SAC) Friday night and Wingate (14-2, 5-2 SAC) Saturday afternoon.

The victories improve Carson-Newman’s record to 8-7 in the 2012 season, and the Eagles have won their last four matches.

Sophomore setter Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.) dished out 31 helpers, a season high for a three set match.

The Bears enter Holt Fieldhouse for Saturday’s match at 2 p.m. with a sweep of Queens (N.C.) and a four-set win over no. 22 Wingate under their belts.

Carson-Newman’s Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Mars Hill’s Maggie Murphy rank fourth and third in the conference in digs/set with 5.0 and 5.33, respectively. First serve for the match is 7 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
