Trio of throwers reset record books at Montreat Final

RESULTS

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Trayzel Juredini-Wyche, Austin Gramann and Ashton Abbott all broke their own school records to lead the Eagles at the Montreat Final.

"Any day you can go out and break three school records in one day is a great meet," says Director of Track & Field and Cross Country David Needs. "All the kids did a great job despite the elements and we were able to have a few athletes move up in the national standings. To be able to go out and also win the meet is just an extra bonus. I'm super proud of how we did today, especially for Austin being able to break the school record one last time in his final meet as an Eagle."

Juredini-Wyche broke his own record in the discus for the second straight event, winning the event with a toss of 53.09 meters, two meters higher than the previous record. It is also his fourth win of the year in the discus.

Juredini-Wyche also finished first in the javelin with a toss of 48.73 meters. This is the seventh straight meet that he has finished in the top-10 in the event with four top-three finishes. Christian Henry set a new personal best in the javelin with a toss of 34.50 meters to earn two points for the Eagles.

Gramann smashed his school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.74 meters, three meters longer than his previous record breaking throw to finish second and earn eight points, his sixth top-10 finish of the year. Gramann rest the record books the last time the Eagles competed at Montreat on Mar. 27 at the Montreat Invitational with a toss of 44.07 meters, breaking the original school record set by David Vandergirff all the way back in 1979.

The Eagles racked up 24 total points in the men's high jump, taking home the top four spots in the event. Isaiah Kyle lead the way with a new personal best clearance of 2.12 meters to take first place, a mark that moves him up to seventh-place in the nation. Shane Connell, Sam Cleek and Danilo Cardoso all finished tied for second with a clearance of 2.00 meters to earn seven points.

Sterling Melancon earned four points with a fifth place finish in the 100 meter run with a time of 11.27 seconds. This is the 23rd race this season Melancon has finished in the top-10. Zuriel Jimpson finished 10th with a time of 11.38 seconds.

Courtavious Garrett set a new personal best in the long jump with a third-place finish with a distance of 7.24 meters. Garrett has now finished in the top-five in the long jump at six straight meets and is just 0.02 meters away from setting a provisional mark for the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships.

Draven Green finished seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.52 meters to earn two points. Green also earned four points after finishing fifth in the shot put with a toss of 12.48 meters.

Alexis Brown finished 10th in the javelin with a toss of 23.35 meters.

A total of seven personal bests were set at the event for Carson-Newman.

In the team standings, the Eagle men finished first at the event, tallying 77 points, winning by eight points over host Montreat. The women's team finished ninth, racking up 28 total points. Brenau placed first on the women's side with 62 points.
