Charamba runs top-five national time at Flames Invitational

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Makanakaishe Charamba took home first place in the men's 200 meter run pacing the Eagles on day one of the Flames Invitational.

The Harare, Zimbabwe native won the race with a time of 20.84 seconds, beating out Michael Gizzi of Alabama-Huntsville by 0.47 seconds. The mark is a new personal best and gives Charamba the second-best time in Division-II in the race. Charamba sits behind Marlin Davis of Lenoir-Rhyne, who holds a time of 20.79 seconds.

It is the second straight year that the Eagles have had a runner hold a top-five time in the 200-meter run. Devon Moore finished the 2021 season tied for the fourth-best time in the event at 20.78 seconds.

For the second straight meet, Shane Connell took home the event championship in the high jump. The Manchester, England native won the event with a clearance of 1.98 meters, the only jumper to clear that height. Connell has now won the high jump event championship in three of the last four meets he has competed in between the indoor and outdoor season. Connell has never finished lower than fourth in the event, and has finished either first or second in seven straight meets dating back to the 2021 Lee Last Chance. 

The Eagles finished day one with eight top-10 finishes and nine personal bests

Trayzel Jureidini-Wyche finished third in the discus throw with a toss of 44.96 meters. The Douglasville, Ga. native has now recorded ten straight top-five finishes in the event dating back to the 2019 L-R Open. 

Nathalie Schumacher begin her weekend strong, finishing fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.60 meters. The junior has now finished inside the top-five in the event at eight straight meets, dating back to the 2021 Flames Invitational almost exactly one year ago.

Siphosethu Boya finished eighth in the 200-meter run with a time of 21.73 seconds, beating his old personal best mark by 0.17 seconds. Boya has recorded a top-10 finish in the 200-meter run in four of the last five races he's competed in. 

Ian Salyer recorded his third straight top-10 finish in the hammer throw, finishing tenth with a toss of 38.78 meters. 

Christian Shouse finished ninth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.88 meters. Shouse has finished inside the top-10 in the event at seven of the last eight meets he has competed in. 

Matthew Bretscher finished ninth in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.90 meters. Bretscher has finished in the top-10 in the event in five of the six meets he has competed in during his career in Mossy Creek.

Tshenelo Lemao set a new personal best in the 200-meter run by 0.11 seconds, recording a time of 23.05 seconds. Delan Grant finished the 200-meter run in under 24 seconds for the first time in his career, setting a new personal best with a time of 23.86 seconds.

Tytiana Wilson just set a new personal best in the 200-meter run with a time of 25.88 seconds, beating her old best time by 0.06 seconds. Her teammate Lauren Tabor finished the 200-meter run in under 27 seconds for the first time in her career, finishing with a time of 26.93 seconds. Abbie Zander beat her old personal best in the event by 0.47 seconds, recording a time of 27.46 seconds. 

Hunter Miller beat his old personal best in the 5000 meter run by over 13 seconds, finishing the race with a time of 16:31.19.

In the women's 5000 meter run, Imke Van Gog set a new personal best by almost eight seconds, recording a time of 19:25.90. 

In the team standings, the Carson-Newman men sit in fourth with 27 points while the women sit in 20th with four points, but are ahead of Division-I North Florida and no. 25 West Alabama.

Alabama-Huntsville leads the men's standings with 70 points while Lee leads the women's standings with 58 points.
