Women tied for third, men in fourth after day one of the Montreat Invitational

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - A solid day from the Carson-Newman track & field team sees the women tied for third and the men in fourth following day one of the Montreat Invitational.

The women's team scored 29 points and sit in a three-way tie for third with the host Cavaliers and SAC foe Tusculum. The men's team tallied 25 points on the opening day of action from Black Mountain. UNC-Asheville sits in first on the women's side with 52 points while host Montreat sits in first on the men's side with 52 points. In the combined teams scores, Carson-Newman sits in fourth with 54 points.

In all, the Eagles recorded 14 top-10 finishes and eight personal bests on the first day of their time in Montreat. 

On the track, the first day in Montreat was all about the distance runners. 

In her first track & field action of the season, Rachel Strayer set a new personal best in the 1500 meter run, finishing third with a time 4:47.06, beating her old mark by almost seven seconds. Strayer is now just three seconds off from tying or resetting the school record in the event. 

Raymond Brugmans also set a new personal best in the 1500 meter run, finishing third with a time by 4:01.94. That mark beats his previous personal best by almost five seconds.

Kirby Logan III finished eighth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:45.06, beating his personal best by over ten seconds.

Katie Smock finished sixth in the 5000 meter run, finishing the race with a time of 40:48.36.

Channler Moran-Boothe ran the 10,000 meter run for the first time in his career, finishing eighth with a time of 34:57.54.

In her first time running the 1500 meter run, Imke Van Gog recorded a time of 5:18.23.

Hunter Miller set a new personal best in the 1500 meter run, finishing with a time of 4:23.40, setting a new best mark for him by almost two seconds.

In the field events, Nathalie Schumacher continued her solid start in the 2022 outdoor campaign, finishing fifth in the javelin with a toss of 31.28 meters. Schumacher also set a new personal best in the long jump, recording a mark of 4.78 meters.

Sydney McCarty did not miss a beat transitioning from indoor to outdoor in the long jump, finishing second in the event with a jump of 5.62 meters. The mark is a new personal best.

The men's jumps squad's success continued at Pulliam Stadium, as Christian Shouse finished second in the long jump with a distance of 6.95 meters. His teammate Coutavious Garrett finished fourth with a distance of 6.79 meters, his third straight top-five finish in the event. Camden Fritz rounds out the top-10 for the Eagles, finishing seventh with a distance of 6.62 meters.

In the pole vault, Abby Owens finished third with a clearance of 3.25 meters. Owens has now recorded six straight top-five finishes in the event, with five straight top-three finishes. Her teammate Marlee Baker finished seventh with a clearance of 2.65 meters.

Matthew Bretscher finished sixth in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.80 meters.

Christian Henry eclipsed 40 meters in the javelin for the first time in his career, setting a new personal best with a throw of 40.09 meters.

Ian Salyer eclipsed his personal best in the hammer throw by over four meters, finishing ninth with a toss of 41.93 meters.
