C-N Cross Country Teams Compete at Eye Opener on Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Carson-Newman cross country teams opened the 2010 season on Saturday in the Eye Opener Invitational at the Milliken Research Park.

The Lady Eagles claimed 13th place in the event, while the Eagles had three runners participate as individuals.

On the women's side, freshman Ashley Matthews (Sanford, N.C.) finished 42nd to lead C-N, while sophomores Brooke Earhart (Dickson, Tenn., 52nd) and Meredith Nix (Walhalla, Tenn., 67th), senior Melissa Ford (Richmond, Va., 81st) and freshman Amanda Bowman (Greeneville, Tenn., 89th) all had strong showings. Lauren Henry (Greeneville, Tenn.) and Stephanie Savino (Southold, N.Y.) finished 102nd and 105th, respectively for the Lady Eagles.

In the men's meet, junior Justin Browning (Madisonville, Tenn.) finished 125th to lead the Eagles, while senior Jonathan Madden (Franklin, Tenn.) and freshmen Joen Nielsen (Ringgold, Ga.) crossed the finish line in 144th and 172nd place, respectively.

The C-N cross country teams return to action on Sept. 18 as they host the Carson-Newman Challenge at Panther Creek State Park in Morristown, Tenn.
