Thigpen's complete-game shutout gives Eagles split at Augusta State

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Carson-Newman's Robby Thigpen fired a complete-game shutout to lift the Eagles to a 3-0 win in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Augusta State. Augusta State sophomore second baseman Jeff Rice hit a three-run homer Saturday afternoon to spark the Jaguars to a 7-2 victory over the Eagles.

With the split, the Eagles are 1-2 on the year.

Thigpen (WP, 1-0) carved up the Jaguars with only one walk and four strikeouts in the Eagles win. The senior induced 14 fly ball outs and allowed only six runners to reach base to give the Eagles their first win of the season.

The Egales got two hits, including a two-run single in the eighth from Lucas Mohon, to give Thigpen enough offense to get the Eagles the win.

In game two, Jags' junior righthander Josh Barks (1-0) earned the win with 6.0 innings of work. He gave up six hits and allowed just one earned run with six strikeouts and two walks. Chase Johnston allowed three hits in 1.1 innings of relief, while Clint Echols worked 0.2 innings and Zack Breaux closed out the game with an inning of scoreless relief.

ASU junior first baseman Seth Foster went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Kevin Dodson, Curtis Parker and Matt Smith all went 2-for-4. Dodson and Smith combined for three runs scored and Parker drove in a run.

Trace Rogers and Bo Ausmus combined for seven hits for the Eagles in the nightcap.
