CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Another day has come and gone as Carson-Newman swimming looked to cement more qualifying times for the upcoming 2022 NCAA DII Swimming National Championships as part of the Royal Open.
"Overall it was a great meet and the swimmers did great with a great attitude," head coach Jordan Taylor stated. "I couldn't have asked more. Now we just have to pray that when they announce the national invitations, we are ranked high enough!"
Senior Joey Clemmer (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) set a Division II 'B' provisional time in the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a finals time of 2:00.70. He followed this performance up with a time trial in the event with a time of 2:00.18, the fourth-fastest event time for CNSW.
Then, in the men's 100-yard backstroke, Matthew George (Manchester, England) swam a finals time of 49.45. This places the England native and C-N senior with the fifth-fastest event time in program history.
In the women's 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Kennadi King (Marietta, Ga.) swam a finals time of 23.88. This places her with a Division II provisional 'B' standard time.
The men's 1000-yard freestyle saw freshman Alonso Castro Hablutzel set the fourth-fastest event time with his time of 9:30.21 in Saturday's finals. The time also gives Castro Hablutzel a Division II provisional 'B' standard.
Asger Hartvig set another top-five program time in the men's 100-yard breaststroke. His finals time of 54.76 sets as the third-fastest for an Eagle and is a Division II 'B' standard time.
Carson-Newman will await their fate as the 2022 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships loom from March 9 to 12 in Greensboro, N.C.
"These athletes went into this weekend with a bit of momentum but some were a little flatter at conference so they got a chance to improve. Sometimes it's hit or miss with the quick turn around."
