JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Vice President for Athletics Matt Pope has announced the hiring of Carson-Newman cheer alumna Makyla Chollman Wyatt as the university's new head cheer and dance coach.

"We are very excited to welcome Makyla Wyatt as our new Head Spirit Squads Coach," Pope said. "While some transitions are challenging and complex, we found ourselves fortunate that Makyla eagerly desired to lead our Spirit Squads into the future.  We look forward to big things in both the leadership and programmatic growth of our spirit squads and feel we have found a great fit in Makyla Wyatt."

A 2018 graduate of Carson-Newman, Wyatt majored in business and administration with an emphasis in marketing. She was also a member of the Eagles cheerleading squad during her three-and-a-half years on the banks of Mossy Creek. Wyatt earned recognition on the dean's list five times and four times as an Eagle Scholar.

Wyatt would start her cheer coaching career down the road in Greeneville, Tenn. at Tusculum.  She spent a year as the program's graduate assistant in 2019-20 before taking on the role of assistant coordinator – a position she held from 2021-24.

Wyatt, a Knoxville, Tenn.-area native, spent three years as a gymnastics instructor at East Tennessee Gymnastics.  Wyatt is a licensed realtor.

She is married to former Carson-Newman cheerleader Gavin Wyatt. The couple resides in New Market.
