Eagles drop pair of matches to Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. - The Eagles suffered their first back-to-back sweep losses since April 20, 2019, falling to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

"We learned a lot today," says head coach Cat Lind. "This is one of the strongest teams we will face this year and we had some good moments of execution but fell short of stringing them together. We have a lot to work on but I am encouraged at the progress and look forward to our growth."

GAME ONE: Coastal Carolina 5, Carson-Newman 0

The Eagles fell 5-0 to Coastal Carolina in game one.

Alanis Mendez and Lauren Williams fell 21-7 and 21-12 at the no. five position.

Joy Rhodes and Morgan Siwiec fell 21-11 and 21-14 at the no. four position. The pair are the only Eagles that have yet to record a win this season.

In the exhibition match, Piper Halcrow and Alyssa Johnson suffered their second loss of the season, falling 21-19 and 21-13

The no. two pairing of Abby Struewing and Sierra Still fell 21-12 and 21-8, their first loss in straight sets this year, clinching the match for Coastal Carolina.

Summer Coulter and Megan Oldenburger fell in straight sets 21-14 and 21-15. 

Lindsey Geurin and Mia Toribio were the only pair to push the Chants to three sets, winning the first set 21-19 before losing the final two sets 22-20 and 15-12.

GAME TWO: Coastal Carolina 5, Carson-Newman 0

The Eagles dropped their second straight match of the season, falling to Coastal Carolina 5-0.

Morgan Siwiec and Joy Rhodes fell in their sixth straight match of the year, losing in straight sets 21-10 and 21-5. 

Alyssa Johnson and Piper Halcrow saw their first match of the year at the no. five position, falling 21-11 and 21-9. 

Pillar Daugherty saw her first beach volleyball action of her career as her and Alanis Mendez dropped the exhibition match 21-19 and 21-11.

Summer Coulter and Megan Oldenburger fell in straight sets 21-12 and 21-13, clinching the match for Coastal Carolina.

Abby Struewing and Sierra Still dropped their second straight match for the first time this season, falling 21-9 and 21-15.

Mia Toribio and Lindsey Geurin fell in straight sets 21-11 and 21-17. 

This is the first time Carson-Newman lost every game in straight sets since falling to St. Leo on April 20, 2019.

Coastal Carolina now takes a 4-0 lead all-time in the series against Carson-Newman. These are the first two victories for the Chants against the Eagles on Sandlapper soil, as the previous wins came in Wilmington, N.C. Carson-Newman falls to 1-10 all-time against Palmetto State based squads.

The losses drop Carson-Newman to 3-3, sending the Eagles to at or below .500 for the first time since March 1, 2019 when the team started the season 0-2. 

The Eagles return to Mossy Creek for the final time in 2021 on Wednesday, Mar. 31 to take on St. Andrews in a doubleheader. The first match begins at 11:00 AM.

It will also be senior day for the Eagles. The five seniors will be honored at 10:30 AM at the Carson-Newman Beach Volleyball Courts.
