Lady Eagles drop only decision at Erskine, 12-11

DUE WEST, S.C. - The Carson-Newman softball team dropped a 12-11 decision in eight innings in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Erskine. The second game was called after eight innings due to darkness with the game tied at 5-5.

The Lady Eagles are now 6-5-1 on the season.

Game 1

Carson-Newman built an 8-0 lead through four and  a half inning, but Erskkine rallied to grab a dramatic 12-11 win in eight innings.

The Flying Fleet were able to stave off being run-ruled in the fifth with a two-out, three-run home run to cut the lead to 8-3. The Fleet would get another run in the inning to cut the C-N lead in half at 8-4.

Erskine would climb all the way back into the game in the sixth with a seven-run frame. The Fleet were able to take advantage of four walks, a hit batsman, an error, and two passed balls in the inning. Erskin had only four singles in the inning.

C-N built its big, early lead behind 10 hits in the first five frames.

Cassidy Skeen (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled and scored to lead off the game.

The Lady Eagles would add three more runs in the fourth as Skeen, Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.), Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.), Sara Kelley (Birchwood, Tenn.), and Kim Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) all singled in the inning as C-N moved ahead 4-0. 

Shealy and Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) would follow with home runs in the fifth as the Lady Eagles built their 8-0 lead before the rally.

Carson-Newman rallied wih three runs in the seventh to tie the game at 11-11, but left the bases loaded in the inning.

Shealy led C-N going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Price added two hits and three RBIs.

Shealy took the loss for C-N allowing ten earned runs and seven walks.

Game 2

C-N rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh, but the Fleet tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning before the game was called due to darkness.

Leah Price led the Lady Eagles with three hits and an RBI.

Kee and Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, Tenn.) each added two hits for C-N.
