Bio

2022: Hughes was eighth in the country with 64 RBI this season. Hughes had five games this year with at least four RBI and three with five or more. Hughes was 11 RBI away from Brittany Hefner's (2013) school and SAC record 75 RBI for a single season. Hughes has the fourth most RBI in a single season in school history. Hughes  hit 14 home runs this season, she has the 17th double-digit home run season in school history and is tied for third in school history for a single season with with Elayna Siebert (2015).  With 16 doubles, Hughes next two-base knock will move her into the top 10 in program history for a single season. The sophomore hit .403 with 16 doubles, two triples and 14 blasts. She has also stolen five bases. Hughes was named SAC Player of the Week on Feb. 26.  Hughes' prodigious slugging gives her the first SAC Player of the Week honor of her career and the first for an Eagle since Shannon Smith was recognized on March 16, 2021. The Gibbs product was 5-for-13 at the plate last week with 13 RBI in a 4-0 week for the program.  That amounted to a 1.385 slugging percentage and a .385 batting average.  All five of Hughes hits were for extra bases.  She slashed a double against Lander and smoked two home runs against both Erskine and Emmanuel. Hughes crushed back-to-back three-run blasts in consecutive plate appearances against the Lions.  She became the first Eagle to homer in consecutive plate appearances since Shannon Smith did so at UVA Wise on March 13, 2021.

  • SAC Player of the Week (2-26)
  • All-SAC Second Team 1B

2021: Hughes becomes the first C-N freshman to receive all-league laurels since Haley Caldwell during the 2018 season.  Hughes hit .367 this year with eight doubles, two triples and four home runs while driving in 26.  The freshman has peaked at the right time heading into conference tournament play.  She has tallied hits in nine of her last 11 games, including a seven-game hitting streak from March 27 – April 12.  Hughes has a septet of multi-hit and multi-RBI efforts.  She tallied a four-hit day at Wingate on March 27 to start her hit streak.  A frequent clutch hitter, Hughes tallied a walk-off RBI single against King in her second career game and a top of the seventh go-ahead home run against the Bulldogs as a part of that four-hit game.

HONORS:

  • All-SAC Second Team

HIGH SCHOOL: Played for Carson-Newman legend Carol Zachary Mitchell at Gibbs High School where she helped the Eagles to a state title her freshman year  and region titles as a sophomore and junior.  In her high school career, she hit .421 with a .510 on-base, 155 RBI and 24 home runs.  She was named a freshman All-American by MaxPreps.  She was named all-district three times and all-state as a sophomore.

PERSONAL: The daughter of Amy and Michael Hughes, she plans to study elementary education at Carson-Newman. She was a two-time TSCA All-Academic Team selection.
