ROCK HILL, S.C. – A quartet of Carson-Newman softball players has been named to the South Atlantic Conference's all-tournament team, the league office announced earlier this week.
Leah Sohm (Knoxville, Tenn.), Morgen Baker-Celis (Kentfield, Calif.), Macey Hughes (Corryton, Tenn.) and Emily Harris (Cumming, Ga.) were all recognized for their contributions in guiding Carson-Newman to the SAC title game where it fell to Lincoln Memorial.
Sohm was nearly impossible to get out for the weekend. She tallied eight hits in 11 at bats and hit for the cycle for the weekend with a five singles, a double, a triple and the first home run of her career that Sohm actually hit out of the park, a sentence we still can't believe we're writing.
Sohm hit .727 for the tournament and slugged 1.273. She drove in three runs. She was responsible for the only runs Carson-Newman scored in its 2-0 quarterfinal win over Wingate.
Baker-Celis provided the Eagles with potent pitching throughout the weekend. The senior was 2-1 with two complete games. She fired 294 pitches across the three games. In 17 innings, she gave up 15 hits and eight runs, five earned with three walks and 12 strikeouts.
Hughes was 4-for-11 at the plate for the tournament. She drove in four runs, all of which came in Carson-Newman's semifinal 11-0 run-rule win over Lenoir-Rhyne. She had a double and a two-run home run for the weekend en route to hitting .364.
Harris hit .500 for the weekend, tallying five knocks in 10 trips to the plate. She tallied a pair of doubles in the three games to move within two, two-base hits of Carson-Newman's single-season doubles record. She also drove in two runs for the weekend with a sacrifice hit and a sacrifice fly.
