CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Carson-Newman swim team completed the preliminary portion of day one at the Bearcat Midseason Invitational on Thursday at the Keating Aquatics Center at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"The whole team had a very solid morning session," coach Jordan Taylor said "We're starting the meet off right and are ready to build upon that for this evening's finals."

The morning saw the Eagles battle both the Bearcats and the Indiana State Sycamores for spots in the finals of 10 events, which will take place this evening.

The highlight of the beginning of the meet for Carson-Newman came in the men's 500 free, where sophomore Marcelo Figueiredo (Porto Alegre, Brazil) set a new program record with a time of 4:32.32. This broke the previous mark of 4:33.59, set in the spring by fellow second-year swimmer Jon Lancaster (Ringgold, Ga.).

Coach Taylor also got a great performance out of Lancaster, who posted the third best time out of 12 swimmers in the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 1.53.77, behind only Cincinnati's Matt McDonald and Nate Jones. In the women's 50 free, Lisa Postma's (Leiden, Holland) time of 23.70 put her second and Elly Culp (West End, N.C.) was right behind her in third place at 23.73 in a pool 24 swimmers. The a.m. hours also saw Jonny Goss (Heiskell, Tenn.), Sam Schechter (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Pijus MacKevicius (Kaunas, Lithuania) claim three of the top four spots in the men's 50 free.

The first of three days of races at the Keating Aquatics Center will conclude this evening. The night's first event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Details of the goings-on in Cincinnati will be posted on cneagles.com after the final competition.
