Knoxville, Tenn. – The final day of the University of Tennessee Mid-Season Invitational wrapped up with C-N swim teams holding their own against D1 competition over a three-day period.
The No. 9 ranked women's team collected a 7th-place finish at 121 points with Marshall University just ahead with 167.
The No. 19 ranked men's side collected a sixth-place finish with 167 points.
Over the course of the three days, C-N swim athletes compiled 12 lifetime best times, 10 season-bests and four different school records.
Notable swims on the final day include the 400-yard individual medley where Jon Lancaster finished fourth in the 'b" final with a time four seconds higher than his previous season-high at 3:58.14.
In the 200-yard backstroke, The Ringgold, Ga. native also earned the top time out of the 'C' final swimmers, edging a Duke swimmer and three other Tarheels with a time of 1:50.01, two seconds higher than his seed time.
Andrei Roman cracked the top-10 in the 200-yard breaststroke finals, finishing second out of the 'B' group of athletes with a time of 2:00.68 beating his previous season-best by two seconds.
For the women, senior Maggie Melhorn earn a spot in the 'B' final in the 200-yard breaststroke, swimming a time of 2:17.22 which was good for a third-best time in the group.
C-N's 'A' team in the women's 400-yard freestyle relay of Margaret Stansberry, Elly Culp, Lisa Postma and Melhorn, finished in 9th with a time of 3:24:32 topping their seed time by a full four seconds. The relay team topped Penn and Marshall's 'A' teams.
In the same event, Laurel Sankowski, Mary Northcutt, Regina Zipperer and Kelsey Robins swam in a time of 3:33.15 topping their seed time by five seconds. The group finished just shy of Marshall's 'A' team by one second.
Postma recorded a second-place finish against swimmers in the 'C' final of the 100-yard freestyle with a new season-best time of 50.51 narrowly topped by Denver swimmer Aysia Leckie at 50.48.
The next meet scheduled for C-N swim comes on January 26th in a dual meet at home against King University.
"Awesome weekend all around from the team. Couldn't be more proud of their efforts and accomplishments," Coach Jordan Taylor said. "All the coaches congratulated me on a great meet and they were very impressed with Carson-newman swimming. The relays tonight to finish of the meet were fantastic. Great swims all around A and B both men and women. School record from the ladies by 2 seconds and 3rd fastest in the country!"
