Eagles looking to get back on the winning track against Wolves

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team is looking to bounce back this weekend against Newberry.

 

Carson-Newman (4-6, 3-3) has struggled of late losing two out of their past three matches. During the two losses the Eagles dropped every set in singles play against opponents. Newberry (12-5, 4-1) on the other hand is coming off of a victory against Lenoir-Rhyne.  

 

The Wolves are in a tie for second place in the South Atlantic Conference standings with both Anderson and Queens. The Eagles are looking up the leaderboard sitting in seventh place with a 3-3 record.

 

The last Carson-Newman victory came during the 2010-2011 tennis season. That year the Eagles swept the Wolves 9-0 for their second and final conference win of the season.

 

Preseason second team All-SAC performer Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) will look to end her three match losing streak on Sunday afternoon against the Wolves. The sophomore is 3-7 on the year and just 2-4 in conference play this season.

 

Fellow preseason second team All-SAC performer Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) is also having a rough start to her conference season. The junior is just 2-4 in conference play this season and has moved down a spot to No. 3 singles to try and break out of the slump. In doubles play Corsato-Owsianka and Harris have teamed up at No. 1 doubles with a 4-4 record on the year.

 

Freshman Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) has been the most consistent Eagle for the women's tennis team. Liashova has gone 5-5 overall and 3-3 within conference play and will try to get back on the winning track against Newberry. Liashova has recently transitioned from the No. 3 singles position up to the No. 2 singles position to help the team get back on the winning path.

 

Klara Vuckovic (Germany) has also emerged as a consistent singles player within conference play for the Eagles. The freshman is 3-3 within conference play and 4-6 overall at the No. 4 singles position. Vuckovic and Liashova are the Eagles No. 2 doubles team and have played outstanding this season. The freshman duo is riding a two match winning streak, while compiling an overall record of 6-2 and 5-1 in conference play.

 

Rounding out singles play for the Eagles is Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) at No. 5 singles and Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) at No. 6 singles. Neither player has been able to get anything going in singles play, as Tatum has gone 4-8 overall and Ledington has compiled a 3-7 record. The tandem have not fared well in doubles play, going just 2-6 on the year as a pairing.

 

Two-time South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Elizabeth Williamson leads the Wolves into Mossy Creek on Sunday afternoon. Williamson has compiled a 13-2 overall record and a 4-1 conference record on the season. Williamson has seen time at the No. 1 singles position going 7-2 and the No. 2 singles position going a perfect 4-0.

 

The Wolves primary No.2 singles player is Amanda Carrillo who has a 9-2 record at the No.2 singles position. Carrillo has also compiled an 11-6 overall record and a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play this season.

 

Marta Gomar has locked up the No. 3 singles position for the Wolves going 6-1 and is currently on a two match winning streak. Gomar has compiled an overall record of 9-2 and a 4-0 conference record for the Wolves.

 

The No. 4 singles player for the Wolves is Rebeca Martinez who has gone 6-3 at the No. 4 position. Martinez has also split time at the No. 3 and No. 5 singles positions, acquiring an overall record of 11-6 on the season.

 

The final three singles positions are split between a trio of players for the Wolves. Lucia Davia has compiled a 9-7 overall record with a 3-1 conference record. Kelly McManus has struggled of late, having lost her last four matches. McManus has a record 4-9 and was replaced by Veronika Viegas who is 5-6 on the year.

 

The Wolves No. 1 doubles team of Carrillo and Williamson is coming into the weekend red hot with an 11 match win streak. The duo are currently 12-1 on the season with a perfect 5-0 record within conference play.

 

The primary tandem at No. 2 doubles is Davia and Martinez who have compiled a 4-4 record on the season with a 2-0 mark in conference play. The final tandem for the Wolves is Gomar and McManus who are 5-0 at No. 3 doubles on the season.
