Eagles Split Twinbill with Augusta State

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Junior pitcher Austin Bridgewater (Morristown, Tenn.) scattered four hits and struck out 10 batters in 7 1/3 innings of work in his Eagle debut to lead Carson-Newman to an 8-0 win over Augusta State in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Olmstead Stadium. The Eagles dropped the second game, 5-3.

With the split, both C-N and Augusta State are 2-2 on the season

Bridgewater (1-0) set the tone early in game one as he didn’t allow a hit and tallied five strikeouts in the first four innings.

Senior Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) provided all the run support Bridgewater needed in the top of the first inning with a RBI single.

C-N added to its lead in the third inning, as Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.) brought in a run after being hit by a pitch.

Lance Reed (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) each produced a RBI single in the sixth and seventh inning, respectively, to push the Eagles’ lead to 4-0.

C-N then put the game out of reach with a four-run outburst in the ninth.

The Eagles pounded out 13 hits in the game. Rogers went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the way, while Lockwood went 3-for-5. Lamson finished with two hits and drove in two runs, and senior Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) also tallied two hits in the win.

Augusta State starting hurler Chase Johnston (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings on the mound.

In the second game, the Eagles held a 3-0 lead through four innings, but Augusta State rallied to score five runs in the next two innings en route to a 5-3 win.

Long gave C-N a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning as he delivered a RBI single and later scored on an error.

Sophomore catcher Mason Guymon (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) came through with a RBI single to left field in the fourth to push C-N’s lead to 3-0.

Starting pitcher Cy Fraker (Indianapolis, Ind.) allowed the Eagles to build their lead with a solid 4 1/3 innings of work as he gave up just one run on two hits and had four strikeouts.

But Augusta State’s Cole Payne crushed a two-run home run to left field off C-N reliever Mike Mullen (Bradenton, Fla.) (0-1) in the fifth inning to spark the Jaguars’ five-run rally. Payne finished the game with a pair of hits and four RBIs.

Augusta State starter Josh Barks (1-0) worked six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits to earn the win.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday in their home opener against King College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
