JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman’s Ryan
Hendrickson (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Wes McIntyre (Chattanooga,
Tenn.) combined to pitch eight shutout innings, and Derek Long
(Jefferson City, Tenn.) hit a three-run home run to break open a
1-0 game, as the Carson-Newman Eagles beat visiting Limestone
College, 9-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball
Complex.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 20-8, while Limestone falls to
10-20.
Hendrickson (WP, 3-0) and McIntyre each struck out five and
allowed only five singles to support an Eagles offense that could
only muster one run through six innings.
“(Hendrickson and McIntyre) pitched well,” Eagles head
coach Tom Griffin said. “We worked out of some jams. I
thought the big inning and home runs late made things comfortable,
but we made it tough on ourselves by not doing the small things
well at the plate.”
Hendrickson pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the
second inning by forcing a pop up to C-N catcher Lance Reed
(Johnson City, Tenn.) and striking out Limestone’s Casey Seay
to end the inning. He also picked up a swinging bunt from
Limestone’s Dylan Campbell and dashed across home plate with
the bases loaded to record the first out of the inning.
McIntyre allowed just one single in three innings of work.
A solo home run by junior Wesley Dozier (Cornelious, N.C.) was all
the offense the Eagles could manage through six innings. The
Eagles’ third baseman drove an offering from Saints starter
Cameron Culp over the right field fence in the second inning to
give C-N a 1-0 lead that would stand until the seventh.
C-N left eight runners on base through six innings, but
capitalized in an eight-run seventh.
After designated hitter Jon Dalton (Rutledge, Tenn.) and Jeff
Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) were each hit by a pitch to open the
inning, Long ripped his eighth home run of the year over the left
centerfield fence to build the Eagles lead to 4-0.
Dalton would add a towering three-run home run in the inning as
well as the Eagle blew the game open at 9-0. Second baseman Aaron
Vargas (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and right fielder Corey Lamson (Gray,
Tenn.) each added singles in the innings.
Designated hitter A.J. Lewis led Limestone with two hits.
Carson-Newman returns to action with a three-game South Atlantic
Conference series at Brevard College this weekend. Friday’s
single game begins at 2 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader is
set for noon in Brevard, N.C.
