JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman baseball team
remained hot at the plate on Sunday afternoon, as the Eagles
pounded out a season-high 18 hits en route to an 11-6 victory over
Tiffin at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
The Eagles, who swept the three-game series with the Dragons,
tallied 49 hits on the weekend.
With the win, C-N extends its winning streak to six games and
improves to 10-6 overall. Tiffin falls to 3-10 on the season.
Senior Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and junior Wesley Dozier
(Cornelius, N.C.) collected three hits apiece, including two
doubles, to lead the Eagles at the plate. Long went 9-for-11 on the
weekend.
Senior outfielder Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) and freshman
second baseman Tyler Davis (Carrollton, Ga.) also contributed three
hits each in the win, while Morgan Gregory (Nashville, Tenn.) added
a double and a triple and Cody Nix (Cartersville, Ga.) produced a
pair of singles.
Tiffin managed to produce six hits on the day, as left fielder
Jason Bailey (North Lewisburg, Ohio) led the way with two hits,
including a solo home run. Dragons catcher Jason Kulp (Columbus,
Ohio) also had a two-run homer in the loss.
The Eagles received stellar outings from a pair of relievers, as
senior Ryan Hendrickson (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and junior Chase
Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) combined to give up just one run and one
hit in five innings of work.
Hendrickson (2-0) earned the win after giving up one run on one hit
and striking out four batters in three innings on the mound. Boruff
then pitched a perfect eighth and ninth inning and had two
strikeouts to pick up his second save in as many days.
Tiffin starting hurler Trevor Woodjetts (Burlington, Ontario) (0-3)
was tagged with the loss. He surrendered seven runs on 11 hits in 4
2/3 innings of work. He also had five walks and three
strikeouts.
The Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on
a RBI single by Lockwood, but the Dragons answered with a five-run
outburst in the second, highlighted by Kulp’s two-run home
run.
Dozier and Davis each produced a run-scoring single for C-N in the
bottom of the second, and Gregory delivered a RBI double to trim
Tiffin’s lead to 5-4.
The Eagles then tallied one run in each of the next three innings
to take the lead for good and they put the game out of reach by
scoring two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
C-N returns to the diamond on Tuesday at Anderson (S.C.). First
pitch is set for 4 p.m.
